Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair from VMF-312

April 13, 2024 · in Aviation · · 11 · 410

This one was a long time in coming. The build was interrupted by a house move and the need to build a new model studio with a paint booth. But once that was done, I got back to painting.

To get the build done, I used Quinta cockpit and then I decided to do a bit of scratch building to improve the look of the Corsair. This meant bits on the engine, landing gear, a new armored windscreen, gun barrels, tip lights. For those interested I have a build video here: https://youtu.be/JLK9h2Sg-qg

I essentially had to paint this plane twice as a small disaster happened when I peeled off paint masks - along with chunks of the Gloss Sea Blue paint! Argh. Oh well, a careful paint strip and a re-do actually fixed a couple other mistakes and got me my finished Corsair. The paint and finish video can be found here: https://youtu.be/QASzuhhD81Y

I also had fun making a base: https://youtu.be/ekOTfzjdOlg

I hope you like it! It was a labor of love.

  1. Excellent result and really nice remedy on your paint peeling off, Chris! Great videos, too!

  2. A wonderful result after a busy period, Chris @modelairplanemaker
The videos will be very helpful for future builds, thanks for sharing.

  3. Looks great, Chris (@modelairplanemaker). Paint problems can be a real headache, but the model looks awesome afterward. Moving to a new house can be very disruptive.

  4. Thanks for going to the trouble of making the videos. I am starting to try some of those imaginative alterations, and even used the hypo needles for guns on the same Corsair. Using tape initially did not occur to me. Next time. The same is true of using lead wire/ solder. It does make sense though. I would like to know a bit more about your new spray booth, as I either need to make or purchase one.

  5. Wonderful build & finish...high degree of realism.

  6. Beautiful F4U !

  7. Really Nice, Chris. Well done!

  8. Nicely finished Corsair Chris. Well worth the pain of repainting.

  9. Excellent! Sometimes a second paint job works out for the best. Been there, done that.

  10. Looks good - would love to see more pics of the whole thing!

  11. Very nice Chris. I feel your pain. I basically repainted my entire Corsair that I just finished
