Gray Victoria Cross: 1/48th Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair

August 4, 2024 · in Aviation · · 20 · 253

The 1/48th -1D kit is considered to be one of the better fitting model kits around. It is typically reasonably priced, has good details, optional folded wings and dropped flaps, giving model makers excellent results right out of the box. Not bad for a 1998 release.

It is definitely on my recommended list for most model makers. My only hesitation is that the additional complexity of the wing fold and flaps may seem a bit much for some novice kit builders or those wanting a real straight-forward assembly.

You can see more in-depth detail of this build with additional photos at: https://www.flypastrush.com/post/corsair-iv-fg-1d

Thanks for looking & good luck on your next build.

  1. Surely we’ve had enough builds of this iconic kit already?

    • That may just be your opinion, George @chinesegeorge. 😉 That doesn't seem like a very encouraging comment to me. Please, lighten up a bit! 😊

      • Agreed.

Let's remember my old friend the late Al Superczynski's rule: Build YOUR MODEL the way YOU LIKE IT and above all HAVE FUN.

        • Absolutely Tom - "You do You" always applies, especially in a hobby. Always have to remember to build it for yourself and don't sweat it too much if it didn't end up perfect or up to someone else's standards. - Did you learn something - Did you enjoy the build - Great, now "Rinse and Repeat" 🙂 - Cheers All

      • A Corsair in one form or another often ends up in a model aircraft collection (similar to Spitfires, Me109s, P-51s A6Ms)... sure it's commonplace, however I needed one in my collection (what am I saying, "one" - more like several 🙂 If every post here is required reading, I think I am falling behind! - Thanks to Gary for the reminder to Keep it Positive 🙂 - Cheers

    • You may want to avert your eyes here as I am probably going to post another kit you have already seen before way too many times... sooner or later 😉 - All in good fun (don't ya know)

  2. Very nice work! 👏

  3. Great work on this! Cool to see a build with the wings folded. Excellent result

    • Thanks David, Yes the wing-fold certainly does give the aircraft a different look... and it saves space so if you want to build MORE, now you have room for at least one more 🙂

  4. Excellent job and really great result!

  5. A fine result, @flypastrush
Those Corsairs with folded wings are great to look at, especially when build like yours.

    • Thanks John, (@johnb) That Tamiya kit is a real gem of a kit, considering the cost of acquisition and all 🙂 I will probably end up doing another... maybe an "Under Maintenance" diorama for a challenge - Cheers

  6. Excellent work!
As a newb really enjoy seeing different configurations and styles, and no, really cant have to many of these beautiful, iconic warbirds

    • Thanks Steve, That Tamiya kit is a great kit to build (for any skill level) with everything in the box to get you an interesting looking Corsair with the wings folded (or not). As an added bonus you can usually pick up these kits very reasonably priced. - Cheers

  7. Very nice Corsair!
