Matchbox 1/72 Me-262 (PK-21)
This is a 40 year old build that needed a good cleaning and it also needed to complete the painting on the fuselage and engine nacelle's sides. When I built this in 1985, I never applied the mottle paint patterns. I think I gave up on it and pressed on to another build which was my Lancaster.
So to finally call this kit done, I used water colour pencils (light blue/green and light gray) first applied semi wet to smudge up the sides and then some dry brushing to spread the smudges around. The final application of the water colour pencils was done dry to smooth some edges and to thin down some of the light blue/green smudges.
After the mottling was done I went ahead and did some high lighting of the panel lines with a black lead mechanical pencil. Then I masked the canopy and airbrushed the model with a semi-flat coat to tie it all together.
The marking used on this build is from a Me-262 that was used as a bomber in the 2nd staffel KG 51 Edelweiss, November 1944.
It is not perfect but it is cool to see it displayed on my shelf again.
Great result! The box art is a true classic.
Thank you Stellan (@stellan)! Yes, Roy Huxley works are amazing and has made many classic box arts. He will be missed.
Always good to see an older kit resurrected and and back on the shelf. Nice job on the 262 Bob. 👍
Thank you Guy @thom! Since this year started I have brought back 5 kits, 4 Matchbox and one Airfix. I am enjoying seeing them looking proud again. Later hopefully during the spring I want to restore my old Matchbox Stranraer build. It needs a good cleaning, forward gunner position needs some new parts that were broken off years ago and some rigging needs some repair.
Look forward to seeing the Stranraer Bob 👍
That boxart...I think I built 10...
All of Roy Huxley's box arts are amazing! Back in the 70's I lost count because I built so many of them. I still have a few in a box with other builds from that decade. I built my first 3 in 1973 when my local hobby shop first loaded them on their shelves. This shot shows most of my current Matchbox builds. In the past 2 years I have built 5. The rest is from the 80's, I have lost at least 10 from that time frame.

It's a beauty, Bob! Super cool!
Thank you Spiros @fiveten! 🙂
Bob, @v1pro , the Me-262 looks great !
I always enjoy seeing your work on the classic kits you build. The water color pencils is a great idea.
Thank you Jay @ssgt! The water color pencil idea came from my wife. I used my grandson's set on this kit! I would like to practice on one of those Italian schemes and see how it will turn out.
That's an impressive Matchbox build, Bob @v1pro
I really like how the mottling turned out, especially considering the scale. The applied technique seems perfect for it.
Thank you John @johnb. I've seen a few videos on You Tube with modelers using water color pencils. And before I saw their videos it was my wife suggesting that I use water color pencils. I've been dabbing on it since my P-38 Lighting build, a bit over 2 years ago. I first used it to spread the aluminum around to make the metal show wearing out of the paint or from erosion. When I made my 1/72 Jeep, I used it to color the seats, and dirty up the whole rig. Every model is a bit different on how to handle it. This Me-262 was different from the others but I would like to try it on the German and Italian desert schemes.
Excellent work on the update - it looks great!
Thank you Greg @gkittinger. 👍😊
Nice job on this oldie.
Thank you very muchh Gary @gwskat! 👍😊
