A Fine Little One-O-Nine

March 15, 2025 · in Aviation · · 8 · 149

This fine and dandy 1:72 Bf-109F by Fine Molds was a gift from @guitarhack5 who knows my affinity for 109s. A great feature of this kit is the decals to replicate this aircraft's complex camouflage scheme, something I hadn't tried before. This greatly simplified the painting process. Spraying the fine complex camo pattern with the decal's precision was likely beyond my skill set.

This kit's plastic is really good, approaching Tamiya quality. It went together like a charm.

The decal process was enjoyable, yet complicated. The decals are well printed but a bit on the thin side. They were somewhat fragile when setting solution was applied. But, they all laid down well for the most part. The main exception was the large wing camo decals that did not want to lay down. It took copious amounts of setting solutions, both Micro Set/Sol and Walthers, and a lot of coaxing and panel liner to bring out the wing details.

This was a nifty project and filled a notable gap in my 109 collection.

BTW, this was my second completed build of the year.

First time I see this scheme being provided by decals, which is not noticeable.
Any kind of trick you used to apply them this nicely?

  4. Nice job! Interesting use of decals.

  5. Very nice, Dennis (@dmeyers). I would never have guessed that the camo was from a decal. Well done getting everything to lay down. The next model in my build line is a 109, and your cool plane has me itching to get started.
