An airfield in North Vietnam

April 13, 2025 · in Aviation · · 16 · 306

About three months ago I started building a MiG-21 with North Vietnamese markings. My original idea was to take part in an Instagram contest focused on the Vietnam War. At first, I was planning to build both a MiG-21 and an F-4.

Then my plan changed — I thought about making two separate dioramas: one featuring the MiG and the other the F-4. On the airfield surfaces I wanted to paint the national insignias — half of the insignia from each of the two warring countries facing each other. In fact, these insignias are almost identical, with only the colors and proportions being different.

For now, I've managed to complete the first of the two dioramas. I'll be starting the second one in a few days. However, only the first diorama will take part in the contest...

For this project I used Eduard's 1/48 MiG-21PF kit No. 8236. I also added 5 Aerobonus figures and several aftermarket parts from Phantom Model Kit and other brands.

You can check out the progress of my work here: https://bit.ly/4j8PqTT
Below you'll find the rest of the photos I've taken so far of the completed diorama.

Hope you like it — I look forward to reading your comments!

  1. Fantastic diorama, Davide! Joyfully followed your build thread!
    Congratulazioni!

  2. REALLY great job. That kit builds a very good MiG. The fit and detail is amazing. You even got the correct cockpit color for the PNAF MiG 21...usually overlooked...well done!

  3. Awesome build Davide! Looking forward to seeing the Phantom.

  4. This is such a wonderful diorama, Davide @dapo68
An absolute winner when you display this at a contest.
I really enjoyed your build thread. Very learningful.

  5. An excellent diorama with great poses and nice painting. The concept and realisation is superb. My only thought is that your figures are a bit 'western'. Maybe more work to achieve Vietnamese skin tones?

  6. That looks fantastic! Some really nice detail work. Thanks for sharing.
