I am calling this one DONE!

Hasegawa, 1:48 scale, Nakajima Ki-44II Ko, Army Type 2 Fighter, “Shoki”, Reporting Name, “Tojo”. 85th Hiko Sentai, 2nd Chutai CO, Capt Wakamatsu Yukiyoshi, Jogai Airfield, Nanking China 1943.
Capt. Wakamatsu was KIA on 18 December 1944.

Great little model which is admittedly starting to show it’s age when compared to other more recent Hasegawa releases (Like the F1M2 “Pete”). The overall fit is good and the detail is enough.

Paint is a combination of Tamiya LP-11, MRP and Alclad II. Decals are from the kit and the spares box. I was NOT a fan of the decals provided for the wing ID bands. The next time I’m going to paint them. They are the things I like least about this kit. However, it was an original 2005 release, and I'm guessing the decals soured over time. Still, in all it was a nice little model and I enjoyed the build.

Thanks for looking and I hope y’all are building away!

  1. Excellent result on this older Hasegawa kit, Frederick @fjs3
A very nice scheme which you applied beautifully.

  2. G’day Frederick (@fjs3),
I’ve built a couple of these and have one more in the stash. One of the builds was an early production aircraft withextra resin parts and a bit of surgery required. The other was a nice simple build.
Yours is well done, particularly the paintwork. I never trust leading edge decals.
You can say yours is down to weathering.
    Liked!

  3. Looks great! I just finished one of these (smaller scale), and want to do a few more in a variety of schemes - I really like this scheme, with the camo not quite covering up the underlying NMF. Really nice touch.

  4. Really nice Frederick. I don't think it was your decals, mine were dodgy as well. The white bands were beige, the wing Hinomarus were under-size and broke apart as did the wing walk decals

    • The decals were definently the weakest part of this kit. Their age wasn't much of a help either. Hasegawa's decals got much better as they released more Japanese subjects. The sheet for the "Val", "Kate" and others were great. For the next couple of "Tojos", I'll be painting them on for sure.

      Cheers

  5. Great looking result!

  6. Wonderful result as always, Frederick! Amazing this kit is already 20 years old, time flies...

  7. One of my favorite aircraft. The old 1/48 Hasegawa kit can still be built into a good representation, but I'd love to see a modern tooling in 1/48 from someone. For some reason it seems to be one of the less popular IJA subjects. But I love it's looks, with the huge engine on the small airframe with the stubby wings. It looks like a 1930s racing plane to me. And while IJA pilots may have considered it heavy, it was still only ⅔ the weight of an Fw-190.
