Airfix 1/72 A-4B Skyhawk, VA-15 Valions, USS Intrepid, Tonkin Gulf 1967

Hi all,

In order to keep the illusion going for the kids, I always purchase gifts for my wife and myself to put under the tree with their gifts around Christmas. For myself I usually just get something cheap and so this year I bought the kit. Must be one of the best 13 Euros I've ever spent!
Had a lot of fun building this one, and had an equal amount of fun researching just how damn grimy these planes would get after prolonged service on board a carrier.
I think I spent more on buying the paint and the Eduard masking set than on the actual kit 😉
All she needs now is a flying stand.

So, in conclusion, if you need a break from big and involved projects, you could do a lot worse than dropping a few of your hard earned on this Scooter.

  1. Having fun is the key word of all hobbies, model making is no exception...that scooter looks very nice indeed, Airfix has been launching some very nice and affordable kits these past few years, that one seems spot on

    • Thanks!
Airfix has always been under my radar, but then I started hearing good things about their recent releases, so I figured I'd give one a try. For that price it's not a big loss if it turns out to be a cat in the bag.

  2. I've always wondered if this is a new release or a re-release of their older kit.

Whatever, you got a really nice result out of it.

    • Thank you!
Given how easy the kit goes together (for an Airfix kit), I think it's a new tooling. According to Scalemates, it's a rebox of their 2012 tooling with new transfers.

  3. Excellent Skyhawk! Try their Martlet/Wildcat kit it's also a fun kit.

    • Thank you!
I also have a Tamiya Wildcat in 1/48 that I need to finish, but I may just follow your advice. Ever since reading Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, I got a soft spot for those plucky little fighters.
