1/48 Classic Airframes Fokker DXXI

March 15, 2020 · in Aviation · · 11 · 1.7K

Hi all. I have finally completed this one. The build was fun, the painting... not so much. My final coat of matt varnish was a disaster when it fogged all over. I still don't know why. Never has before.

All attempts to remove it failed, ecen clear coating it again with gloss.

I had to brush paint over the airbrushed finish due to the decals. Not a huge fan of Hataka paints, but will use the remainder for when I do my G1.

Anyway, here is the completed ( abandoned ) DXXI. Militarie Luchtvaart late 1939.

Thanks for looking. ?

  1. Looks cool and beautiful to my eye, Paul. Makes me want to build one in the future! Thanks for sharing.
    All the best!

  2. Great job ,especially considering the problems you had ,I remember having the same problem with varnish once ,for some reason the matt varnish (Humbrol) just went white as it dried and I had to start again also I've tried Hataka paints and can't get on with them ,I find them difficult to thin correctly so they constantly clog the airbrush , I have given up with them.

    • Thank you.
I've found out it was the type of thinner I used that made the paint turn. Got the right type now. But still won't use Hataka.
The thinner works on all acrylics apparently. A general purpose thinner from an auto shop. Lol

  3. Is this the first kit, the one with the photoetch interior? If so, you are a far better man than I, Charlie Brown. I tossed two of those unbuildable kits (nothing fit!). The second go-round was still awful, but doable.

You've managed a great model from whichever of these awful, throw-it-against-the-wall kits you made this from. Bravo!

    • Thanks mate. Yes its the first one. Never again lol.
But its STILL easier than the Special Hobby Fiat Br20... lol, which is one of my favourite builds overall due to the difficulty and paint job.

  4. Looks great! I always liked the look of this aircraft.

  5. Came out looking good in the end. Always good to see the non-usual subjects!

  6. Looks great! Makes me want to pull mine out of the stash... but I’m not going to lol.
