My 1/350 Lindberg Tirpitz

February 15, 2021 · in Ships · · 19 · 3K

Motivated by pictures I saw of the Justin Rogers' Bismarck, I thought I share my model of the . The model's superstructure actually represents the Tirpitz much better than it does the Bismarck. I added two small structures to represent the missing aircraft hangers. Finally, I used jewelry chains for the anchor cables.

  1. That's a nice model out of the old Lindberg kit, Ulrich @albreuf.
    Welcome aboard!

  2. Welcome to this great community, Ulrich @albreuf
Great start with this Tirpitz build.

  3. Welcome, Ulrich! It’s nice to see that built. I received that kit as a Christmas present when I was a kid in 1970 or ‘71 and remember how huge it seemed!

  4. Hello!

Thanks for the warm welcome, and the nice words for my Tirpitz. I received this kit as a gift this Christmas.

I used to model a lot in the 1970s when I was in school. I had Bismarck, Scharnhorst, Prinz Eugen, Graf Spee and Z28 in 1:600 from Airfix, as well as Hood, Warspite, Nelson, Ark Royal, Ajax, Suffolk and several destroyers on the British sude. I also built a Heller Bismarck in the late 70s. Unfortunately, they did not survive moving to the US. I work on modeltrains mostly, but feel like building some ship models again now that I am retired.

  5. That is a very nice ship. Welcome to this amicable and supportive modeling site.
    Keep the models coming !

  6. Nice to see an oldie built and looking nice ! Good job!

  7. Hello!

How do you suggest to recreate the black line dividing the red and the grey. Taping off a 3mm wide strip with parallel edges seems difficult, and probably looks worse than no strip. I was thinking 1/8" black decal strips for model trains may be the best choice. Thanks,

    Ulrich

    • Decal stripes should work, but in that length you'll have to join them, which shouldn't be a problem if they're exactly the same width. I'm not a shipbuilder and don't know if they do this but another option might be automotive pinstripe tape? It's usually pretty thin tape, by thin I mean in thickness of the tape itself.

      • John,

Thanks. I was thinking about decals for train stripes. They are indeed the same width, and have no clear decal paper at the edges. The automotive striping tape may work. How sticky is it? I do not want it to be too sticky so I can lift it without damaging the paint in case of corrections of the alignment.

        • About the stickiness I'm not sure, you may have to try sticking it on something else first to get the feel of it. My only real experience with it was using it as a paint border in my stairwell something like 35 years ago and it still looks good.

I also used it for this, my Testors (Hawk) P-51 after I botched the kit decals for the yellow stripes, also about 35 years ago. As you can see it's thicker than a decal would be but not that much thicker, especially on a big Lindberg Tirpitz, it might work out OK.

You could paint some scrap plastic with the same paints then try adjusting the tape on that first to see if it pulls the paint up. However you decide to do it, Good Luck!

  8. Nicely done! Welcome to the site.

  9. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Welcome to this forum, hope you have a good time here.
Nice first posting and job on this old and classic model.

  10. Welcome Ulrich! Great looking Tirpitz and like DE4EVER said, your model makes a great first entry. Heck, I've been on here for nearly 3 years and I STILL haven't posted anything!

Glad to have you on board, @albreuf !

  11. Hallo:

I want to give an update on the modelling of my Tirpitz. I have gotten some railings from Heller 1:400 kits from a friend in Germany and installed them on the Lindberg model. I thought photo etched detail would be too fine for the model of that vintage. Here is the result. Only project left is to attach decals for the black waterline strip. However, I need to get some decal softener for that, but do not want to order it by mail.

  12. Looks great! Love seeing the older kits get some love. I have the Bismarck but apparently it's a better start for the Tirpitz. I'm adding some leftover parts from the Academy kit along with the Eduard Big Ed set for the Tamiya kit.

    • Lee:

Thanks. Yes, the Tirpitz is a better ship to model with the Lindberg kit since the upper deck layout is pretty close. I added an aircraft hangar scratch-built from some styrene to get the raised boats and railings from a heller kit which a friend from Germany sent me.
