1/48th Tamiya Me-262

December 7, 2012 · in Aviation · · 6 · 3.5K

After seeing Grega X post on his beautiful I thought I would put my effort up here also. I have to agree, this kit is awesome, I have built the Monogram and Dragon Me 262 in 48th scale and this one is better on all levels.

I wanted to do something a little different so I ended up building the test bed aircraft V056. I was inspired by a group of pictures of this craft and my little scene trys to capture them as best I can. This aircraft was used for aerodynamic testing of the vertical fin and also for various radar antennas. This let me present a rather varied paint scheme on the aircraft. A portion of the right aileron had been replaced and was in natural metal. The tail of the plane had been painted black and covered with wool tufts to show that airflow (this can be seen in one of the pictures I used for reference), after those were removed the tail of the plane was repainted, but for some reason they did not repaint the right horizontal stabilizer. Also a vertical fin was added aft of the cockpit then removed, that spot was oversprayed with RLM 02. All this variation made painting of this kit a lot of fun.

The kit itself is excellent and the CMK resin worked very well. I have another one in the stash I just need time to get to it. I build at a snails pace so I may be retired before that happens...oh wait I don't think I will ever retire.

  1. Impressive diorama, Walt...very nice presentation and attention to detail.

  2. As Craig said - nice attention to detail, which is the important thing in a diorama.

  3. The two guys ahead of me said it all. Sweet.

  4. Walt, nice and realistic paintwork, I like the low contrast between the colors on the wing.
And I agree with you, the unpainted surfaces, the black and RLM02 areas all adds to an interesting object, well done!

    • Thanks for the kind words Rickard, I had a lot of fun with this kit and was overall really pleased with it. I really want to build another one of the 262 kits, I love the plane and there are lots of neat paint schemes to choose from.

  5. good Lord...that is stunning
