Trumpeter 1/350 Royal Navy Battleship HMS Dreadnought, 1907

September 19, 2024 · in Ships · · 9 · 71

For your attention - the battleship , launched in 1906, became a revolutionary step in the naval fleet of Great Britain. This ship was the sixth in the Royal Navy to bear this proud name. It was distinguished by its unique design, which for the first time in history included the "all-big-gun" principle, which means the use of only large guns of the main caliber. Instead of the usual combination of four main caliber guns and ten to fourteen medium caliber guns, the Dreadnought had ten 305 mm guns. This gave him an advantage in firepower and speed, allowing him to choose an advantageous distance for combat. Its speed reached 21 knots, which was unprecedented for ships of the line at that time. The appearance of the Dreadnought sparked an arms race, forcing other naval powers to build similar ships. He almost did not take part in the First World War, so during the Battle of Jutland he was under repair and did not enter the battle. The only combat encounter with an enemy ship, in the literal sense, occurred in March 1915, when it rammed and sank the German submarine U-29 under the command of Otto Weddigen. After the war, in 1918, the ship was placed in reserve and later dismantled for metal. Thus ended the story of perhaps the most famous ship in history, which became synonymous with a whole class of the most powerful ships of the first half of the 20th century.
