SPAD X111 1/24 ( I love kit ) from the Great War Group
This SPAD was built as part of the Great War build group, where you will find more photos and explanations on the build.
The model was built in the livery of Rene Fonck, the French ace of Escadrille SPA 103 who was the ace of aces for the allies in the Great War (WW1) with a total of 75 enemy aircraft to his credit.
The SPAD X111 was probably the best fighter that the French built in the late stages of the war . It was well armed with 2 forward firing vickers machine guns and was also one of the fastest allied fighters, being equal to or just behind the British SE5a, both using different variants of the Hispano Suiza v8 engine. The SPAD was built in vast numbers and flown by several air forces for years after the end of the war.
Excellent result, Ian! Fantastic build thread, too!
Thank you Spiros.
Very nice SPAD. It is among my favorite WW1 fighters.
Thanks Dan, its up there with the Albatros D111 and SE5a in my opinion.
Very nice result, Ian @firelockg
Thanks John.
Great Spad! What's the Soviet star about?
Just coincidence as the Red Star was Fonck's personal marking.
Thanks Ross, as Dan said it was his personal mark so that other members of his escadrille knew where and who he was. Also before the soviets existed.
Yes the revolution was a bit young for the star we see on French Yaks etc!
Ian, another beautiful piece of work. I enjoy every one of your builds.
Thanks Milan
Awesome Spad!
Thanks Chas.
Looks great, Ian. Well done!
Thank you Gary.
Ah, biplanes, especially a SPAD. Great final result Ian (@firelockg). And turnbuckles! I can barely manage rigging!
Biplanes indeed Carl, you got to love them, well I do, rigging has its moments, but I don't mind it.
Nice pajamas for that SPAD - well done!
Thanks Greg, camo PJs, I wonder.
