iModeler Award

April 1, 2017 · in Aviation · · 26 · 1.8K

The "" P 40 B finally arrived after having gone missing in the mail. Thanks again Martin for all the effort on your part to get my prize delivered! You have proved why iModeler IS THE BEST SITE ON THE WEB for us modellers and the fact that you have gone above and beyond the proverbial call of duty is greatly appreciated.

I will surely build this kit for the SA IPMS Nationals in 2018. Definitely going to be a

P 40 B from 4 Squadron SAAF that served in North Africa during WW II.

  1. Enjoy the build Morne, I am sure that it will be an excellent one.
And yes, this is a wonderful site.

  2. A great site indeed, gentlemen...Morne, I'm jealous of your display case(s) - my builds are covered with dust from the cat litter box (the location of which is non-negotiable) - a nice choice of prizes I might add - glad you finally got it.

  3. Hi Craig. I had the same problem that's why I had display cases made, Sadly, space in the display cases are always limited and will never absorb all the kits in the ever growing stash.

  4. Cheers Morne.
So cool, to see you guys in real life.

  5. Congratulations, Morne !
Well deserved mate, looking at your modelling blog here on IM, some shots of your display case would be very nice.

  6. Vielen dank Bernd. I hope I can post a finished model soon. Feels like ages ago that I last completed something!

  7. Hi, Morne! Congratulations! Like the shelves!

  8. Morne, that's wonderful news, cool to see that smile and a kit that after all the obstacles seems to have arrived in good shape! BTW I love desert P-40s

  9. Thanks again! It is a lovely kit. I have already secured decals for a SAAF P 40 B. It will receive a weathered desert camouflage. Sadly without those distictive sharkmouth markings made famous by RAF 112 Squadron in North Africa. The wait was surely worth it!

  10. Congratulations, Morne!

And a well deserved award too! Happy building, Sir!

  11. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Congratulations Morne ! ... a very well deserved prize. I do look forward to your work on this one. Enjoy your time.

    • Thanks! Have to finish my Trumpy 1/48 Wyvern before I can tackle the P 40 B. Want to give the P 40 B a weatherbeaten look. Most North Aftican theatre aircraft weathered badly. I came across photos showing how sand had blasted away most of the black paint on the propellers of these fighters. Top colours faded remarkably fast given the harsh African climate.

  12. I love the British N. African schemes - can't wait to see it done!

  13. The P 40 B's used by the SAAF were operated in very primitive and harsh conditions in North Africa and the paint had to be frequently touched up and bullet holes repaired and they looked rather weatherbeaten. A veteran SAAF P 40 B pilot, who passed away couple of years ago, said that the ruggedness of the P 40 B was what saved his life on many occasions during the war. He once got attacked by an Me 109 and the cannon shells ripped away large chunks of the rudder and portions of his stabilators, yet he managed to slip into some clouds and evade the Me 109 and made it back to his airfield.
