Academy 1/72 P-40
By way of introduction to the group, thought I’d load up s few pics of a recent build. I only build 1/72 scale and always mounted in-flight, and I only brush paint (occasional rattle can).
I enjoyed the Academy kit. Although it comes with alternative parts to build retracted wheels, it was a better fit and more realistic to modify the “wheels down” parts. This is a constant issue for folks like me who like to build them in-flight, as often the gear doors (and other gear when exposed during flight) don’t fit as well as they should.
Happy to begin contributing to the site – I just found it today and really appreciate all the talent on display!

Impressive first post, stunning paint job. Well made brush or non airbrush paintings left me always in awe.
Great presentation as well
🙂

I enlarged these images to check out your brush-painted finish. I’m impressed you got such subtle finishes. Very nice indeed in this scale.

Great paint work Greg, brush painted too.
I like the stand, was it home made?
Welcome to the site.
Well done mate.

Yes – home made. I probably could put more elbow grease into making the stands look nicer, but I’d rather put the time into the models!

Outstanding workmanship for such a [small] scale, Greg…very nice indeed. I think you’ll enjoy iModeler – in a variety of ways – 🙂

Very realistic appearing P-40 Greg. Can’t help but admire a good brush man.
What brand of paint did you use? Surprised no one ask that already.

I used Vallejo Model Color Acrylics. I have used Testor Model Master enamels for years (and still use for all detail work and some other projects), but with changing formulas it is harder to brush paint now. Vallejo does a good job of self-leveling (eliminating brush marks), although it doesn’t adhere as well and you have to be very careful masking. My next experiment will involve attempting a base coat to give the acrylics something to adhere to, but I need to be careful or panel lines and detail will fill too much (air brushers don’t have that problem).

I love that P-40, you did an excellent job on the angel lines and weathering! I have seen people take weathering way too far, but yours here looks fantastic.
