Revell 1/72 F-4B VMFA-531,Forrestl/Ark Royal
While deployed on Forrestal in the Med.in 1973 A/C 207 of VMFA 531 broke down on board Ark Royal while cross decking, port call to Malta was coming up, part wasn't readily available and being that Malta and the US were not getting along at the time, it was decided to disguise it with 892 NAS tail markings. That's the story I've read, anyway it's the biggest zapping of an aircraft that I've ever seen. This an older build. The kit is another moldy oldie, Revell's Phantom, that first appeared in 1965, technically like the Hasegawa early F-4 it's only accurate as a 'B' bird although it's been marketed as the C, and K models. I kit bashed the decals, and added better pylons. Soon after I built it a decal sheet became available and I think Hasa. offered a kit in these markings.
Bob, that's my favorite Phantom scheme, next to the Jollies. And a great story! Someplace, years ago I saw a photo of the ship at anchor in Malta, with the odd phantom parked amongst the British ones.
"Moldy Oldie" or not, any Phantom is a good Phantom - including this one. 🙂
Nice model Robert. I can't believe I've never seen these markings! Nice photo of the aircraft being towed by a Royal Navy deck tractor too.
Very nice Phantom, I also like the flight deck officer there!
Great story Rob! Nice to see the scheme.
Another nice one Robert!
VERY nicely done, Robert.
