Hasegawa 1:48 Kawanishi N1K2-J Shidenkai George Early Version Kit JT73 #09073

This is one of Hasegawa’s better kits – follow the instructions and get a beautiful result. Which you have done. Even the kit cockpit is OK.
One minor niggle: the gear legs were gloss black, part of the process of creating the piece of gear.

Thanks for the info, but there are photos in “Japanese Military Aircraft Illustrated” that show the gear legs as not black.

Depends which factory the aircraft was built in, I have a photo of an aircraft having one gear leg gloss black and one aluminum. There is a photo of this aircraft in “Genda’s Blade”, partial photo really. It shows a pilot standing at the rear of the aircraft in front of the stabs. The fuselage Hinomaru doesn’t appear to have the dark ring around it. Your model looks great

George nailed it…………… and so did you Travis. The gear legs are not “always” black. In fact most photos I have seen have them in a light color possibly a metallic shade of aluminum.
Here are a few pictures to show it.
There’s even a “restored” plane with them the way yours are depicted.
Don’t lose any sleep over this one………. 🙂

Very well done Dale, Hase produced an excellent kit of the Kawanishi N1K2 Shiden. The weathering, the paint work looks as it should in it’s operating environment. And you are correct, the landing gear was not always in black. Thanks for sharing an excellent build.

This is one of my favorite Japanese fighters of WW II. You really brought out the best in the kit. Your attention to small details, good paint finish makes this model shine in all the right places. Well done Dale!!
