1/48 Hobby Boss FM-1 WILDCAT
Hello everyone,
This is my second completed kit of the year so I've matched last year's total already.
Quite fancied a Wildcat in my collection but wanted to do the Atlantic scheme which is why I chose the Hobby Boss kit over the Tamiya. I added a lumber support to the seat and found some appropriate harness in the spares box which I painted after priming, I added a little wiring to the engine, it's not as orange as it appears in the picture. I did find the wing to fuselage fit a bit 'ropey' but that was probably just me, after tidying up the joints I tried to reinstate detail with scribing and using a fine drill bit to re-do rivets.
The kit was primed with Tamiya fine grey primer and then the white primer, upper side is Gunze aqueous, I managed to ruin some of the decals so had to scrabble about in the spares for some 3's, they're a little undersized I'm afraid. Weathering was done with oils and some citadel washes plus some fine ink pens around a few panels etc.
Quite pleased with how it looks in the pictures but perhaps a bit heavy on the underside weathering and definitely a bit of ' two footer' ?.
Thanks for looking,
Michael.
This ia an excellent rendition of a Wildcat in the Atlantic scheme. Beautiful finish and attention to detail makes this one shine! Well done Michael.
Thanks Morne, I really appreciate your comments.
Excellent, Michael. The subtly worn paint with exposed primer puts this one in the top tier.
Many thanks John.
Looks very nice. I'm just about finished mine, "4". It's a modified Tamiya kit
Thanks George, I look forward to seeing yours, I'll keep an eye out for it.
Very nicely done Michael and fine photography too.
Cheers Jim, very kind of you to say so.
Nicely done, Michael.
Thanks Gary.
Came out great! Looks good in the Atlantic camo!
Thanks Robert, it's a good looking scheme, glad you like it.
It just looks great Michael ! Congratulations for building last year’s output total in just 3 months this year (looks like you are having fun) and especially for completing a wonderful rendition of the wildcat. I disagree with you about the underside weathering being “heavy”... looks right to me
Thank you Pedro, it's nice to be getting through a few builds, not getting too bogged down and over thinking the details.
Michael, an excellent looking Wildcat, I always liked the Atlantic scheme especially when its done well like you've done here !
Thank you very much Terry.
Outstanding build and presentation, sir...well done indeed.
Cheers Craig, thanks for the comments.
A splendid build. Weathering is spot on in my book. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Matt, glad you like it.
That's a real stunner! Love the weathering, and the Atlantic scheme - I'm going to HAVE to build something in that scheme soon...
Thanks Greg, the scheme does catch the eye doesn't it, odd really because it's very simple ?. Thanks for looking.
Ooooooooooh. Lovely, Michael. A masterclass in how to build interest into a relatively monochromatic scheme. Beautifully finished.

Thanks David, I do enjoy trying to bring some life to a subject, next build is pretty much all green so we'll see how I get on!
Can’t wait - would be great if you could do a WiP so we can see your techniques?
I'll take more photos and post them up.
Smashing build !
That's a good looking Wildcat Michael, especially in the Atlantic scheme. Well done.
Thanks everyone for your comments and for taking the time to look.
All the best,
Michael.
Hi Michael, I agree to all the others. Nothing more to say. You did an amazing job. Very organic to me.
Lovely paint job. Lots to feast your eyes on for an extended period of time. Plenty to learn from this one. Well done.
