Hasegawa 1/48 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate

June 27, 2020 · in Aviation · · 9 · 2.2K

While I've a pretty extensive Luftwaffe library, I got ZIP on the pacific, so this is a truly OOB build- kit decals (Grrr... thick Hinomarus 🙁 ), no A/M, not even an Eduard mask!

JAAF Green is Tamiya which performed brilliantly, most other paints are MRP. Aokate is TS-12 decanted and airbrushed, then coated with a mix of Tamiya clear blue & clear green, finished off with Testors semi-gloss lacquer. The monochromatic scheme was great paint practice for improving the marbling/squiggling/Scale-a-Ton technique. I need more practice.

My first experience using Infiniti Model lycra rigging material- TEN stars! The stuff is so good it made me think about building Scharnhorst & Graf Spee! Thankfully I came to my senses in about 2 1/2 seconds. However, I may go back to several models (especially the Spitfires) and re-do the "cheese cutters".

  2. Great model, Stan!
    OOB came out perfect!

  3. Nice build. The subtle variation in the green works well

  4. Very nice result. I'll add to the chorus on the paint work, looks spot on to me.

  5. For sure a great build Stan.
Really like the painting and weathering.
    The rigging also looks nice.
Might give it a try myself as well.

  6. That’s a sweet looking Ki-84 Stan. The marbling effect shows well, breaking that solid topside green and giving the plane much more depth and contrast. It’s a solid build no doubt, well done!

  7. I’m in the process of building this very kit as well and so far I’m impressed with the fit and detail. Yours looks great and has given me some good ideas how to finish mine. I will have to check out that rigging material you raved about.
    Very nice build.

  8. Nicely done Stan

  9. She's a real beauty! Great job on the marbling!
