Second Beaufighter
This article is part of a series:
The first Bristol Beaufighter model I built was in the early 1970’s when I was a teenager. It was 1:32 scale and I remembered that it didn’t fit together very well. I recall painting the model entirely in black and even fabricated the exhaust flame suppressors using drinking straws. It looked pretty horrible. Forty years later, I decided to take a crack at modeling again and bought the Tamiya 1:48 scale Beaufighter kit. At first I wanted to paint it in the green/gray camouflage scheme, but that didn’t work out. So what I have here is the black paint scheme. I built a lot of Tamiya armor models back in the day and my go-to manufacturer for aircraft models was Hasegawa. But Tamiya did a nice job on this kit and It turned out pretty well for me.

Thanks! I think the new models are much better than what was available back then.

Nice model. I’ll tackle it one day! Is it my imagination or was there once an Airfix 1/24 Beau for a brief period?

There might have been a 1/24 Beaufighter, but I got out of the hobby completely years ago so I wouldn’t know. The first one I built was a 1/32 Revell.

Thanks, it does look rather sexy in black – and sinister!
