1/48 North American F-6A Mustang, RAF North Africa

December 27, 2020 · in Aviation · · 6 · 2.2K

Built in 2015.

When the 225 Sqn RAF was in need of long range recce aircraft in , they borrowed four Mustangs from the USAAF which could stay up in the sky longer then the Spits. There´s some discussion about the camo. Either the Brits kept the OD/NG and only added a sand/mid-stone colour or the aircrafts were re-painted in British desert colours. My dad chose the first version.

kit, decals are partly from the kit, the rest is from Model Alliance. The long antenna mast is scratch because the kit includes only a short one.

  1. Another goodie, Reinhard. Weathering subtle and effective.
Oh, how we miss those great kits from Accurate Miniatures.

  2. Love it! Nothing says Recce quite like 4x 20mm cannons. Seldom do we get to see desert Mustangs. Yours has excellent sun fading, and adequately dusty look. Thanks again for sharing.

  3. I think your dad was likely correct in his choice of camouflage - a complete repaint when they were getting the airplanes for immediate need would be counterproductive.

    Nice work.

  4. Another great model, Reinhard!
I agree with Tom, your first option for camo choice is more likely to be the "correct" one.

  5. Superb build by your dad, Reinhard.
This scheme is very nice and the weathering is well done.

  6. Another winner. I’ve always liked this particular plane and painted mine the same way your dad did.
