F-86 RCAF Golden Hawks Sabre – HobbyCraft 1/72

March 10, 2021 · in Aviation · · 19 · 2.6K

Would have had this finished earlier but a bathroom renovation got in the way, funny how other things seem to get higher priority.

This RCAF Serial 23651 aircraft is actually on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton and has several of its panels replaced with clear Plexiglas for an internal view of guns and engine.

The GH is also featured as the March 2021 aircraft in the CWHM Official calendar ...and it is March 2021!

The kit HC1399 is packaged as a Canadair Sabre Mk6, so I guess officially it is a Canadair CL-13B.

I don't think I had to use any filler for any of the joints as the kit went together very well with decent amount of detail in the cockpit.

The decals are from Leading Edge Models and were great to work with.

I was thinking of adding the Smoke System plumbing along the sides but after trying for a couple of hours to get it right I decided to wait for anther day to fight that battle.

Tamiya Paints used all around with Pledge final coat and Micro Flat used on the Anti-glare panel.

Built as part of the Acrobatic Group Build - Thanks to Allan Withers (@kalamazoo) for the starting the GB.

Thanks for viewing.

  1. A nice and colorful build, George.
Very nice to see active airbrakes on this scale.
You really created a 1:1 copy of the original.

  2. Super-duper cool. ALL good.

  3. Yep you nailed it, and in 1/72 scale, really impressive.

  4. Looks great @georgeswork. I have the exact same kit and decal sheet, so thanks for the inspiration and proof of concept.

    "liked" (a lot)

  5. Very neatly finished and definitely liked. Are the photographs taken in your new bathroom?

    • Thanks George.
Here’s the bathroom - The Boss thought it would be a good idea if I painted the vanity so I’m doing that now.

  6. Classic Canadian kite. Nice.

  7. That's one pleasant looking scheme! beautifully done. I think I did a T-33 in this scheme years ago.

    • Thanks Robert,
I did find some photos of the T-33 and it was a nice looking bird.
I also saw that there was an MG Car done up with the Squad Logo.

It is so refreshing to see the Sabre in these colors.

  9. You did it, my friend @georgeswork!
And what an excellent result! This is a gem of a model, depicting a gorgeous looking aerobatic bird of your famous aerobatic team.
Following your thread was a pure pleasure.
Kudos to our friend Allan Withers @kalamazoo for his great Aerobatic GB!

  10. Hi George. Your F-86 is a great tribute to the real one that's on display in the museum. It shines in all the right places. Well done!

  11. Very nice build! We have a "former" Canadian in our local model club, who built the same aircraft in 1/48. Nice to see a rendition in 1/72 (my scale!). Bathroom's looking good too...

  12. Thanks for the great comments gents, always a pleasure to post on iModeler!

  13. Very nice build, looks great in this scheme. I love everything about it.
