1/72 Tamiya Bf 109 G-6 – Romanian markings

June 22, 2021 · in Aviation · · 21 · 2.2K

Man oh man - first time to ever crack open a Tamiya box. Holy smoke - more parts in the cockpit than in the entire Frog 109F build! This was fun.

So obviously I didn't do much, other than add wing tip lights with clear sprue, and I added the small aerial to the lower part of the rear starboard fuselage, per reference photos. Also a pilot. Drilled the gun barrels also.

I did have to do a bit of work on the gear doors to make them look proper retracted (it is a rare kit that has gear doors made to be placed in retracted position...). They needed to be sanded to shape to fit around the wheel well, and then were too short in length, so added some extension.

Decals were from the PrintScale 72-033 Bf-109 G "Gustav" set - except the wing walk markings for one side were completely useless, so I had to use the box decals. I have heard bad things about Tamiya decals, and I can see why... I also used the Tamiya markings for the fuel tank.

I'll definitely build a few more Tamiya kits - I have several in the stash, and am now motivated to pull them out!
