1/48 Revell P-51D Mustang
Both Monogram and Revell have popped out a zillion of this kit it seems. You see this kit everywhere; eBay, Amazon, FB Marketplace. I picked mine up at a garage sale. The molds have been around since 1977. It's still a fun kit to build with decent detail and not at all complicated. Of the two versions in the box, I chose "Big Beautiful Doll". The checkerboard cowling does take a bit of patience when applying, requiring some pre-cutting in order to get the decals to lie flat. Built a couple of years ago, it was on this kit that I "cut my teeth" with regard to puttying seams, weathering, exhaust and pin-washing.
I love looking into the history of the planes I build, and take reference photos if I ever see them in museums and airshows. I am including some reference shots I took at Boeing's Museum of flight in Seattle. The Big Beautiful Doll is an amazing story. It's pilot in WWII was John D. Landers, and he has the unique distinction of being an ace in both the PTO and ETO. Here is a link to part of his story:
