Tamiya A6M2b

March 24, 2022 · in Aviation · · 9 · 1.2K

My latest finished kit is this A6M2b. It's another wonder kit from . I used Mr. Color Japanese Grey/Green for the overall color. I added white to the grey/green and while painting the effect was much more subtle looking while the paint was wet. After curing overnight the difference in values was greater than I expected. Even though it was a bit accidental I like how the mottling came out so I let it be. I also used Eduard canopy masks to make that job easier.

Tamiya makes me look good again.

  1. Yet another wonderful result out of the good Tamiya kit, Scott!
    Love the colors rendition!
    An 1/72 jewel.
    Well done!

  2. Fantastic result, Scott @guitarhack5
The mottling effect does give it a realistic look to my opinion.
Very nicely detailed cockpit, especially in 1/72

  3. Great looking Zeek - and I think the tonal variation looks great as well.

  4. Great model and painting! But I'm sure that you used spinner for A6M5 version. Very realistic Grey-Green comes from mixing 1: 1 of C336 and C60 paints.

    • Lis, I thought the spinner was looking a little odd compared to other kits I’d seen. I’ll double check to see if I followed directions correctly. Fortunately, I still have the other prop and spinner!

      • I build couple of Tamiya Zero Sen kits, and as I remember there is two spinners and two propellers, for different versions. Big spinner are for large engine cover for A6M5 model. If you can change it it will be great, if not it will be great too 🙂

  5. The mottled effect looks great. Love the cockpit as well!

  6. I love the final look. I've had the same experience with that mottling approach as well. Usually I don't have enough contrast and it all but disappears after the clears coats go on. I think yours looks rally good. Great work Scott.
