Eduard 1/48 P-51D-5 Mustang "Nooky Booky II"

February 18, 2023 · in Aviation · · 27 · 0.9K

2nd kit of 2023- first time building an kit.

Overall it was a mixed experience, detail was amazing inside and out but definitely a level of "fiddliness" that was frustrating.

Some self inflicted wounds along the way as well but overall I was pleased with the result and will have a better approach when I build the VLR special edition later this year.

Built out of the box (yes I even used the seatbelt decal!) and finished with Vallejo acrylics. I used Vallejo metal color for the first time and really like the way they look. Happy modeling!

  1. @dbutlr - Great work David. I don't do many plane kits... is that a rear view mirror on the canopy? It makes sense for it to be there... I've just never noticed one up there before. Your detail work and weathering looks really good.

  2. Thanks for the kind words @brithebuilder! yes that is rearview mirror on the canopy.

  3. Great looking Mustang! Nice job getting those flaps to look right. That was the most fiddly part on my build. As far as ease of assembly I really liked the Airfix version, but I will probably build several more Eduard kits too. Tom Cleaver has some great tips on how to deal with a lot of the fiddlyness for next time.

    • 100% agree with you about the flaps- they drove me crazy! Airfix is a really good option too, especially as you mentioned for ease of assembly. I built one last year and had a good experience.

  4. Looks really nice, David. I love the 357th FG schemes. You have achieved just the right amount of color variation and weathering in your finish. Looks flawless to me. I plan to do Bud Peterson's "Hurry Home Honey" in 1/32 soon. Your work has given me added inspiration. Thanks for posting.

  5. An excellent job and equally excellent result, David! This kit is fiddly to build, but, once put together, looks very "right".
    Camo is wonderful.
    Well done!

  6. Amazing result, David @dbutlr
Chosen scheme is beautifully applied, I do have the same experience with Vallejo Metal series.

  7. Looks great, David. Excellent paintwork.

  8. David,
A smart, tight build with some clean edges. I like the nose work with the yellow and red checker board pattern and the prop and spinner combination. The wing walk wear and tear along with some of the leading edge chipping and the canopy stands out as making this build a winner.

    Smashed the like button.

  9. Beautiful kit skillfully accomplished, David.

  10. Great details on your build. Weathering & paint chipping is spot-on.

  11. Very nice Mustang!

  12. That looks good David. Nicely applied weathering, just right 👍

  13. Nicely done build.
Just finished my Iwo Jima VLR Mustang. It was fiddly as advertised but it looks good after all the work.

  14. Very nice Mustang. Have never built an Eduard one, only Tamiya and Revell/Monogram. May have to go get one.

  15. Looks very nice, one of the better Mustang builds I’ve seen.

I saw this one a few days ago at the Tulsa Air & Space museum. It’s very nice too.

  18. Very nice work, and the nose and spinner area looks really good. Well done.
