Arado Ar 196 A3

June 28, 2023 · in Aviation · · 22 · 581

This is the my completed build of the kit, which was intended to be completed OOB as a little light relief from my ongoing struggle with the MPM He 177. It's a strange kit, quite crude and toy like in places with clumsily rendered detail and some mold misalignment which required significant sanding and filling to rectify. I did give up on the cowl and replaced it with the far superior Quickboost item.

It was finished with a mix of Gunze and Xtracrylic paints and Alclad matt varnish.

  1. Great job, David!

  2. You really have made an interesting and beautiful display for that kit. Posing it in its element like that, really adds to a model and you did it very well. Nice work with the kit too, it looks far better than the description you have given it. Well done.

  3. amazing job, congratulations! great amount of detail!

  4. Very sharp looking build and display! It's really too bad Italeri failed so badly in getting this kit right .

  5. A great build - one of my favorite Luftwaffe aircraft and favorite float planes. Well done!

  6. Excellent result out of a challenging kit, David!

  7. The Italerei Ar-196 is actually the ancient MPM kit, from back in the days when nothing fit because every part was designed by a different person. You're the second person (after me) who I know finished one.

Nice result for all the industrial strength pushing and shoving it took to get this across the finish line.

    • @tcinla I had no idea it was a reboxing? I always thought this was a new tool. It's one of my favorite a/c (built the airfix 1/72 as a kid) - and was excited to have purchased this one as I thought it was new tool. That certainly is my disappointment of the day! Knowing this makes David's build all the better, as any of the older MPM things are a 'challenge' to put it mildly.

  8. Great job, this is a sharp looking Ar-196. The painting and finish is amazing!

  9. Beautiful job on a sow's ear

  10. I'm going through the Osprey book and it's really nice to see someone did this. I think I had an unbuilt Airfix in the stash but it failed to survive the retirement downsize move 🙁

To be honest, it didn't look like an enjoyable build, as with most Airfix of that era.

  11. And the photography just makes the build better!

  12. This came out really well, David.

  13. @davecope109 - Great work David. The diorama is very well designed. The positioning of the figures really helps tell the story.

  14. You clearly got the most out of this challenging kit, David @davecope109
All imperfections of this kit were perfectly corrected.
I do like to base you put it on which nicely shows her natural environment.

  15. Great model and diorama, David (@davecope109). You certainly went above on beyond for this model that was taking a break from your other models. Well done.

  16. That's real modeling to get such a fine result from such a difficult kit. Well done!

  17. Super scene there David. Great modelling 😊

  18. Top notch results on a not so top notch kit! Great job on this one!

  19. Brilliant work David @davecope109, that build is amazing even from a bad kit. Well done. How did you do the water effects?
