An old favorite!

This is the old P-40c. It's still a great little kit after all this time and I always have at least a couple it my stash. With a little work this kit is capable of being a show stopper. I'm not a master modeler by any means, but I'm happy with how this one turned out. The shape is still one of the most accurate and the panel lines are correct, so it's still a really good candidate for anyone who wants to put in the work to bring it up to today's standards, or just to build it out of the box as a simple build after a frustrating super detailed crazy build.

This was my first major build after getting back into the hobby about 10 years ago. I wanted to try all the "latest" techniques. Things had changed a lot in the hobby from back in the 80's. This was the first attempt at rescribing anything. I cast the radiator intake in resin to replace the rudimentary kit piece, added plumbing in the wheel wells and added a resin cockpit of some unknown origin.

I finished it with Vallejo, Tamiya, and Model Master paints, did oil and pin washes and added Ture Details main wheels. The finishing touches were the photo etched drop tank sway braces, break lines and the areal wire made from smoke colored "invisible" mending thread.

I hope everyone enjoys taking a look at this old build. It really challenged my skills on all levels. Like I said this can still be built into a nice model no matter how you prefer to do it.

This in the first time I've ever submitted anything I've built to a website so if there's any typos, please forgive me, I type like a drunken money and I'm doing all this on my phone and I have fat thumbs. I look forward to posting something else soon, until then, thank you all for taking a look.

  1. Fantastic P-40, Clint! Keep them coming!

  2. Superb result, Clint @curtisshawk
You clearly still have your skills present.
The weathering does look very good on this P40.

    • Thank you. I feel I'm a little heavy handed with my weathering, but that is how most of these birds looked on combat. I do try to go for a realistic look, to the best of my abilities.

  3. Lots of nice work on this old chestnut, and a really great result.

  4. Thank you. I have a soft spot for old kits, maybe I try to build them up nice to make up for all the kits I destroyed as a kid. Besides the modern "shake and bake" kits are nice to build, but the old kit push my skills forward. We're modelers rite? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. The most important thing is to enjoy what youโ€™re building, and this really shows in this P40.

    • Thanks. I do enjoy building any P-40. There my favorite. I grew up and live about 5 minutes from where all the P-40s were built. I know they weren't the best fighter of the war but without it we (the allies) would have been "up the creek". It did its job and more.

  6. G'day Clint (@curtisshawk),
    Welcome to iModeler.
    This is a great build.
    Liked.

  7. Always great to make an oldie look so good Clint. Welcome to a great website ๐Ÿ˜Š

    • Thank you. I have a lot of oldies in the stash, hopefully I'll get some more done soon. I have a couple I'm excited to start on, I just need to finish some other projects first.

  8. That kit was the first conventional aircraft kit that I built (25yrs ago), and even still I wouldn't have been able to guess the base kit just by looking at your pics... Great additions and really just excellent results, thanks for sharing.

    • Thank you very much. I remember building this kit back in the late 70's. I didn't build it nice then.๐Ÿ˜… I really like these old kits, it's fun to try and improve on them, but there still great to just build out of the box too.

  9. Wonderful result on that old classic, Clint @curtisshawk! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ‘ You've sure done it justice and it looks great! ๐Ÿ‘
Way back in 2013, I posted an article with my own Monogram/Revell P-40; here's a look if you're interested:

  10. Great result on a vintage kit, I like the way you displayed your build too. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

  11. Looks fabulous- the extra work that you put in to it makes it look even better than the new tool Airfix kit. Well done!

    • Thanks, I appreciate it. I have the Airfix kit in my stash, I'm looking forward to building that at some point. It looks pretty good, at least the cockpit floor is correct in that one.

  12. Fantastic! You are right. The old Monogram kits can be great builds.

  13. Great result - I agree, those old Monogram P-40s still work for me - I've got a couple.

    • Thanks. I always pick one up when I see them there still in production, still relatively inexpensive, especially if you run across them at a swap meet. I always have two or three in the stash.

  14. Great looking Tomahawk. Really like all the added details.

    • Thank you. It's a great simple kit. The add on's were out of necessity to bring it up to today's standards. It's still one of if not the most accurate early P-40kit made. With a little work it can be an award winner.

  15. Not too many folks put those tiny retraction struts on the small gear doors.
You must be one 'o those scale muddlers. Great Tomahawk.

    • ๐Ÿ˜‚Thanks. No I'm no rivet counter by any means. It all depends on the build. Sometimes I'll add little details like that, other times it an it looks good enough type of situation. It depends on how I'm feeling at the moment. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. I grew up about five minutes from where this Monogram kit was built! You did a great job and I love the British version in desert colors. Very nicely done.

  17. Thanks. That's really cool. I probably would have been going through there dumpster to see if there were any goodies ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜…

  18. Great-looking P-40! You achieved a great "road hard and hung up wet" look to the finish - well done!

  19. Thanks Greg@gkittnger That's usually the way my weathering turns out. I feel I'm a little heavy handed with my weathering most of the time, but that's how most of the combat aircraft and equipment in remote combat zones looked. I really want to do a clean build but it's hard for me, they never look "finished" to me.๐Ÿ˜…
