Focke Wulf 190D variants: My 1/48th scale Dora line

October 23, 2023 · in Aviation · · 23 · 327

The FW 190D is a favorite model of mine thanks to its purposeful poise and proportions in the 1/48th scale that give the look of the real aircraft. Over the years, nearly two dozen Doras accumulated in my collection. The majority are Dragon models. I chose to present here four models. Eduard's Dora is considered the best build in the scale thanks to the high detail contents and accuracy. It is easier to build than the much older Dragon model. Nonetheless, when placed together only Eduard's fine riveting lines disclose the origin make of the model.

  1. A beautiful quad set of Doras, Rafi @blackmopane
Must be amazing to see your entire collection of nearly two dozens of Doras, how do you find the space to store all of them.

  2. An awesome Dora collection, Rafi! Great to know that the Eduard Doras build easier and are more accurate than the Dragons.

  3. Beautiful Dora's, the weathering is outstanding! I've been wanting to do a JV44 Dora with the red bottom and white stripes. I'm going to have to pick up one of the Eduard kits.

  4. Here I thought my 10 Doras were an indication of being "obsessive." 🙂

You should try the Hobby Boss kit - it's also accurate, without the Eduard "fiddly" score. The only other one that has the open wheel well and the visible engine.

    Nice work on these Rafi.

    • Thank you Tom.
I believe that the early D9s had their wheel well sealed.
Thank you for the advice. I was considering doing the experimental versions. Given your recommendation, I will try Hobby Boss.

  5. Very nice group of Dora's Rafi, nicely done @blackmopane

  6. All beauties, as I would expect no less from you!

  7. Dora! Dora! Dora! Nice collection.

  8. Two dozen Doras is not hard to believe, such a great looking aircraft.
Each of your builds could be is could be a separate post on their own.

  9. Each one of them is a beauty! Well done, Rafi.

  10. G’day Rafi (@blackmopane),
    Wow.
That is nearly two dozen more than I have built.
I have both a Dragon and Eduard Dora on the “shelf of purgatory” - they are not doomed, just awaiting redemption - that have been sidelined for other builds.
I will get back to them…
The Dora is my favourite aircraft, by the way, so I’d love to see the other “almost 20”.
    Liked.

  11. Thank you Michael.
I plan to post the JV44 group and the Komandeur decal group.

  12. Hi Rafi, that's a wonderful collection of Dora's thank you for sharing them. The Dora is in my top five so you've given me some inspiration to try my hand with another. One thing I saw that stood out for me, is how well you made your slack antenna wires. The main wire is easy, but you got, in my opinion, the perfect drape on the connecting wire. Did you use metal wire or what? If you'd share your technique for this I'd be most grateful.

    • Thank you David.
I used overlock sawing thread. If the wire does not droop like it suppose to, I used glued the low part to the fuselage with a tiny amount of cyan acryl glue. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

  13. I've done the gluing to the fuselage before. Very small diameter overlock thread has been hard to find on the internet. Unless I wanted to by a dozen spools. LOL. I'm currently remodeling my hobby room and I've decided my next project will be the Eduard 190D-9, Hans Dortenmann's yellow one with just the yellow rudder. Thanks for helping me with that.
