Tamiya 1/32 Vought F4U-1 Corsair "Birdcage"

October 5, 2023 · in Aviation · · 25 · 537

Tamiya Corsair "Birdcage".

Pilot: Lt (junior grade) James Halford, VF-17 "Jolly Rogers", USS Bunker Hill, 1943

Model completed in year 2021. Tamiya kit (60324) was excellent, one of the best kits I have ever build. Painted with Vallejo, AK and MIG acrylics, and weathering done with products of the same brands. Cockpit is upgraded with Quinta Studios 3D decals and Hgwmodels seatbelts. EZ Line (fine) was used for the antenna.

I assume that during back in those days painting has a lot of variations, and probably inner wing components should have painted with blue color instead interior green I used. Also in inside of the fuselage there might be used "salmon" red primer, but since there is a lot of variations in the real life, I decided to use green color as seen in pictures.

Base (flight deck I mean) is scratch build from 18mm glulam board (not sure if this is the right term, though), and top layer glued using grill sticks. There are also 3D printed attachment points (or tie-down holes) in wooden decking. Two or three sets of pictures used, one with base/pilot and some pictures without.

  1. That is one beautiful Birdcage, Jarmo @jp. Tamiya really got this kit right. I wish they would downsize it to 1/48th and replace their older version.

  2. Very impressive result, Jarmo @jp
The paintwork and weathering looks amazing as does the base.

  3. Insane. A true masterpiece.

  8. Outstanding Corsair and the deck/pilot ties it together quite nicely. Well done!

  9. Right-on, jroamer, OUTSTANDING in every way...build and finish, including weathering. Very high degree of realism.

  10. Spectacular build. The photography is well done as well and really helps show the detail work you put into the whole kit. I especially like the way the plane extends past the base. These little things take a great build and make it excellent. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Hi Everyone, I'm new to the iModeler community, I just joined a day or two ago. Beautiful F4u build Jarmo. It really is a great kit. I converted one to a dash 2 night fighter a few years back just to do something a little different. I really like your weathering especially around the fuel tank. I was a little overboard when I did mine but I still like how it looks. Great build and I really love the base!

  12. That really is a nice build Jarmo, @jp, you can't go wrong with Tamiya. You really did make the most of the canvas it offers with your paint and weathering. Well done!

  13. Very nice Jarmo, I love the worn look of this workhorse! Great wheatering. The base is very nice as well, how did you design the tie down holes?

  14. Great work in every aspect!

  15. Thank you all for comments, surely appreciated.

Erik, those tie down holes; It has been couple of years, but I probably find those from 3D site called Thingiverse, and scaled those to fit the base. Unfortunately I don't have exact info about the original designer.

  16. The Tamiya Corsairs are good kits, you did and outstanding job on yours.

  17. Impressive, especially your paint/ weathering.

  18. Thanks Mark and Dale.

  19. Tamiya makes great Corsairs, but you raised the bar with that finish and the display deck!

  20. Excellent work, Jarmo. Just wonderful.
And a nice touch to fold the starboard wing. Looks just right.
