Iranian Phantom: Hasegawa 1/48 F-4E
The Hasegawa 1/48th Phantom variants are excellent platforms to explore the diversity of camouflage schemes of the magnificent aircraft. Here, I used DXM's decal sheet to depict a (probable) early F-4E serving in the Iranian Air Force. Iran received Phantoms as early as the F-4D, but photographs that I found show only the late F-4E variant.
What a wonderful camo on a wonderfully built, painted and weathered Phantom, Rafi!
Spotless job as always, a joy to look at!
Thank you Spiros!
Really nice paintwork, as jusual; but how come you have the canopies in that partially-open poition? I believe the Phantom canopy cannot be opened like that (but I could be wrong).
Thank you Tom.
I remember seeing Phantoms taxing after landing with partially opened canopies (for fresh air), but I have not got photographs to corroborate that.
My main motivation to do this was to find an optimal solution between exposing the relatively barren Hasegawa cockpit details as the closed canopies or the one piece canopy do not fit the fuselage properly.
Of course, getting detail sets for every Phantom I build defies the objective of the build.
I believe the partially opened canopy can occur, my friends @blackmopane and @tcinla. Just stopping pushing the switch leaves the canopy wherever it is. Usually the crews fully open the canopies to allow fresh air, but partially opened have been observed. Here is one Greek example, photo courtesy of Alamy.com
Thank you Spiros.
That was some 40 years ago when I was an air cadet (and fortunately, was dropped out.) So far so good with the memory 🙂
The camouflage looks great on this Phantom, Rafi @blackmopane
Great result on the weathering as well.
Thank you John.
Wonderful work, Rafi @blackmopane! 👏
Thank you Gary.
Fabulous Phantom!
Thank you Alfred!
A Phabulous Phantom! nicely done. The canopies were pneumatically operated, without the engines running they would only operate for so long. to do maintenance on the aircraft you'd manually lift it or install a canopy safety strut or charge the system. I don't remember any intermediate positions. but that was on the "J" bird.
Thank you Robert.
Seems like the E model had intermediate positions.

A totally refreshing way to admire the beauty in the F-4 Phantom.
You have done a great work on this model.
Love the paint work and colors.
Nice modeling Rafi. Thank you for sharing these images.
Thank you DE.
Excellent work as always, Rafi. @blackmopane
Thank you John!
another beauty, and a Phantom at that! Love the Iranian scheme - probably my second-favorite next to the IDF desert scheme.
Thank you Greg!
Another Iranian Phantom is coming up.
