1/48 Tamiya P-47D 'Gabby' Gabreski's Thunderbolt

December 6, 2023 · in Aviation · · 27 · 0.6K

With the release of Miniarts kit, it's time to build 's kit out of the stash.

Partially out of the box, just rivetted, wired the engine and brake lines, added the feed lines on the belly tank, a standby gunsight, and an Ultracast seat.

Finished with Tamiya acrylics, and Techmod decals.

Hope you like,

Colin

  1. Very nice Thunderbolt Colin. P-47 landing gears always seem to be too small for the plane 🙂

  2. Excellent work and finish Colin. You did Gabby's Jug proud with this one.

  3. This P-47 is simply stunning! @tail-dragon

  4. Looks extra nice ! Would like to see what you can do with the old Monogram or Otaki P-47s.

  5. Well, since you did it exactly like I did mine, I will now tell you that you have made a perfectly accurate Gabby Thunderbolt, @tail-dragon. 🙂

Seriously, there are so many people who look at the same photos you and I looked at, and come up with the strangest results.

You really did get it right, down to the paint patterns

    • Thanks! I love all your builds, for the quality and accuracy, the history behind every aircraft, and appreciate your comments.
I'm sure you'll agree that, in the middle of a world war, it was most inconsiderate of them to not properly document every paint scheme and variation for us in the future! (Ha, ha)
Trying to get it as right as possible is part of the fun.

  6. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Absolutely the best (in my view) P-47 I have seen so far.
Beautiful work on the cockpit and good detailing on your part Colin.

  7. That’s a beautiful job!

  8. Great job, Colin!

  9. I mean…just amazing. What a gorgeous paintjob, Colin @tail-dragon!

  10. A pet peeve of mine is P-47’s modeled with the flaps down on the ground. We rarely see that configuration in wartime photos. I commend you for modeling the flaps retracted. And if Tom Cleaver says it’s an accurate model, then it is!

  11. Superbly done, Colin @tail-dragon
Lots of extras added which clearly show your modelling skills.
    Well done.

  12. Amazing. I've got this one in the stash too and I hope mine comes out ½ as well as yours.

  13. Colin, I've seen this scheme countless times, but very few people can pull it off this well. This really a very nice looking model !

  14. Excellent job, Colin!
    Congratulations!

  15. Brilliant work on getting this kit to look this good.

  16. That is one beautiful P-47! Nice work, Colin!

  17. An absolute showstopper! Beautiful work Colin.

  18. Thanks everyone for the kind comments, I'm glad you like it!

  19. Truly lovely. Thanks for sharing.

  20. Oh man, please allow me to add my praise for this fantastic scale model, Colin @tail-dragon! 😃 That is some beautiful work, sir, and a testament to your modeling skills! 👏 Truly a great Thunderbolt model. 🏆

  21. As a P-47 Lover I have to say you NAILED this build Colin, @tail-dragon. I agree with previous comments that you have probably gotten the paint scheme as right as it can be. The build looks great and your paint and finish work really have created a beautiful build.

  22. A real beauty! Love this scheme - will do one in the future like this, and probably just use yours as the template!

  23. My favorite P-47 scheme, you nailed it perfectly! Outstanding build and finish, and an awesome color photo of the real deal!

  24. Beautiful work on this bird! It just goes to show everyone the the Tamiya kit is still a great kit. Your work is great.
I think the Tamiya kit .may be a better kit for the average modeler like myself. I don't need all the bells and whistles. I like them, but i dont need them. The Miniart kit is nice for the extra parts though, you can upgrade other "lesser" kits with the unused drop tanks, bombs, and wheels, etc.

  25. This is as good a rendition of Gabreski’s plane as I have ever seen. I totally agree with your interpretation of the camouflage. I plan on doing one too and can only hope mine turns out this well.
