Fortress II RAF Coastal Command1/72 Academy

January 11, 2024 · in Uncategorized · · 18 · 288

Took way too long on this one, getting frustrated with too many oops's.
Kit decals (disintegrating decals were saved with a coat of Testors decal spray)
CMR resin bomb-bay set (although the kit set is pretty good)
Perspex nose window vacuform by Falcon (Squadron) after ruining the kit one (no luck with the Montex masks)
Yahoo instrument panel (strictly an offering to the modeling gods as no humans will ever see it)
Scratchbuilt other interior details and wheel wells.

Another one to file under "Looks Good from a Distance"
Cheers.

    Not only from a distance.

  3. Well done, Aldo. Good to see a different Fortress scheme.

  4. Looks very good from where I’m sitting.

  5. Cool build! I started Academy B-17 too! Did You enjoy Academy decals?

    • Thanks Lis. Hope your build goes well. The decals ended up looking fine, but the small interior decals for seat belts and life preserver labels disintegrated into tiny pieces. Fortunately, I had Testors Decal Bonder in my supplies, and it saved the day. It's a spray designed to use on do-it-yourself decal sheets for inkjet printers. I sprayed the remaining decals and then they worked out OK. I also used in on the Arrow decals for my Mustang I

Turns out Testors doesn't make the product anymore - maybe some of the more experienced modelers here at IM have some suggestions. There are also some discussions out there about replacements:

Best of luck and happy modeling.

  6. Great looking B-17. Really like the color scheme and the weathering.

    • Thanks Doug. I was trying for a pretty dirty look. As you can see in this photo, that nice clean white got pretty grubby in service.
I used chalk pastels for a lot of the weathering.
