Shiden Kai Kawanishi N1KA Weathered Warrior in 1/24 Scale

August 9, 2024 · in Aviation · · 6 · 186

Here's my latest build of the Ban Dai Kai, Kawanishi from a 199X kit. Inspired by the Inca 2.0 concept for the painting, I wanted to try something different from the usual chipped paint often seen on late WWII Japanese fighter planes.

Instead, I focused on creating an uneven, wrinkled metal surface to highlight the aircraft's heavy use. The high speed, quick turns, and hard landings these planes endured often twisted the fuselage and wings, causing the panels to distort over time. This texture mimics the appearance of many Japanese WWII planes, which often showed signs of stress due to their lighter, thinner aluminum skins designed for extended flight ranges.

Using an airbrush, I applied acrylic paint to achieve this weathered, textured effect, bringing out the look of a battle-worn veteran of the skies.
