Stablemates, F-4J 1/72 VF-103, VF-11

December 3, 2024 · in Aviation · · 6 · 124

Way back when there was more variety of aircraft in a Carrier Air Wing, i.e. two F-4, two A-7 one A-6, one E-2 one S-3 and an SH-3 or H-3 squadron. When I was in VF-31 we had with us VF-103 later in VF-74 there was VF-11. both of which I found decals for on one sheet by CAM. Using an F-4 kit I applied VF-103, An Accurate Miniature kit was used for the VF-11. The ESCI kit went together well, the AM kit was warped which I managed to tame. this is the second time that I found an AM F-4 kit with warped parts, it's actually the old kit which is still produced by Revell.

As I mentioned before I was with VF-31 and VF-74, by coincidence, The original Airfix F-4 kit had both these squadron markings in that ancient kit, and to me finding the CAM sheet is another one.

Also included is a portion of CAG-3.

The 103 bird is actually a Mig killer, she is seen in 1975/6 scheme, was lost in1977. The VF-11 bird is that squadrons first attempt at subduing the paint scheme. I think the squadrons were mostly resistant to that directive.
