Franzis Porsche Carrera Type 547 engine 1/3rd scale
This was a simple but fun build, took about 3 days ( i know I cant help it 🙂 ). I painted several parts even they it was not required, I thought it offered some contrast.
The plugs didn’t fire right so I had to repair that. Also it was very loud, the parts were rattling and squeaky, so bad you couldn’t hear the “canned”: engine sound. So I took completely apart and put light dot of oil on all the moving parts it helped a lot.
It also sounded very “tinny” so I took the base apart and added cotton to deaden it some, that worked well also.
Next they had wires for the distributors and motors coming outside the engine and plugging into the side of the base. I thought it looked tacky, so I took apart the base again and ran the wires through the bottom of the engine into the base! Looked much better. However, upon reassembly the plugs did not fire, so once again I took it apart to find the issue. I figured I fried the card with too much heat from the soldering iron. So I ordered another kit (i know ridiculous, but I was on a mission to fix it). It took longer to rewire it than it did to build and rebuild the entire kit, you can still hear the electric motor but there is nothing I could do about that.
The new kit came in and after hours of messing with it I discovered that the “pads” had lifted off the circuit card. So more hours to affect a repair and to my surprised I repaired it, so now I have another kit 🙂
Here are some stills of it and a video i made of the process and of it running
Very nice Cricket (@bikequeen). Good to see you back.
@clipper thank you Carl, I’m trying hard to get back to “normal”, it will never be the same but it will be a new normal!
Yep, I fully understand. It's good that you have this hobby because it can help with that.
Well Carl it’s bittersweet because I used to share every little bit of progress with my husband so I have moments while building that I break down, I have some great kits that i want to build but it’s like starting from scratch. I have to NIX resin kits but they are very fragile and the weather is not suitable from painting. I have the shed pretty much cleared out but its to cold in ther to paint and dont want to run a space hater…..well all this is TMI :/
Stay tuned 😉
Terrific work on this unique model, Cricket @bikequeen ! It looks great !
@ssgt Thank you Jay! I cant tell you how many times it almost landed against the wall, especially when I decided to rewire it 😉
I understand how you must of felt. Don’t tell anyone , but I’ve given up on more models than I’ve completed.
Oh me too Jay…LOL
What a wonderful result of a unique kit, Cricket @bikequeen
Hard to believe it only took you three days to complete.
Definitely like it a lot.
@johnb thanks John, it took 3 days to build but taking it completely apart oiling and rewiring it took another. Week 😉
Could look good with some grease and oil weathering…I like it a lot…
@johnaitken Uhhh perhaps but I’ll pass 😉
Very nice, Cricket (@bikequeen). I agree with you that things like this need some painted parts to add context to the size and shape. Glad you are back. It will be a tough road, but one day at a time.
@gblair … it;’s been more like 10 minutes at a time. Thank you for the kind words :*)
Very interesting. Great work.
@tcinla thank you Tom…its was fun and a great diversion … i owe you an email 😉
Some strong work on this build. No pain no gain and the final result looks impressive. Any time you can animate a model and learn how the real thing works is a bonus. Now your significant other will want a 1/1 Porsche . . . with your new found engine skills. Two thumbs up Cricket
@stephen-w-towle thank you Stephen, it was definitely a learning experience. Sadly though my significant other, passed away in September
My condolences for your loss, Cricket.
@stephen-w-towle thank You Stephen you could a have known
Love it, Cricket! What an imposing model!
Keep them coming!
@fivete, thanks Spiros I enjoyed it
Something a bit different, Cricket, well done for persevering with it.
@chinesegeorge thanks George I enjoyed it except for the tracking down the electrical error 🙂
An amazing project Cricket, all credit to you for your persistence to pull it off . Nice work.
@firelockg Thank you Ian I get really OCD when I have a mission 😉
Nice build and nice improvements! To make it truly realistic, you should put piece of carboard under the center of the engine with some real oil stains on it. At least that's how all of my air cooled Porsche engines lived. 🙂
@dion-dunn LOL. Someone else told me to weather it to make it look more realistic….so maybe I will do both on the next one 😉
@bikequeen - Fantastic build Cricket! It really is nice to see you back to building.
@brithebuilder thanks Brian, like I’ve said its a slow burn, to cold to paint, I realized I could paint in the bathroom now simply by opening the window. I went to take a bath the other day and the tub was black with overspray….ooops LOL….so need to come up with a plan B, it’s a small window
Oooops... yeah. LOL I have my little spray booth vented into a cardboard box with a couple cheap furnace filters. Works great when it's too cold to open a window.
This place is too small for that…I have a box fan I can put in there…tiny parts are ok but larger ones need the shed….i’ll work it out….still way to much to do around here now to worry about it….have a several really cool kits to keep my idle winter months busy
Very Cool and Intersting build, Cricket. Nicely accomplished.
Enjoy seeing your builds, again. Keep 'em coming!
@gwskat thank you Gary, it was a pain but it came out well eventually 😉
