Toyota GR Supra, Tamiya 1/24
This wonderful kit was given to me by my daughter as a birthday present. I do know that she really likes this car a lot, so maybe it is a hint to eventually buy her a 1:1. She definitely convinced me with this kit that the looks of this car are beautiful, so who knows what the future will bring to our driveway.
Before starting this kit I told her that I would love it to build it together. This is what happened, lots of the parts are cut from the sprues and cleaned by her, as well as gluing some parts. The painting part however was something which was left for me. We decided to go for the European Downshift Blue variant, steering wheel on the left side. The kit also has the option to build it with the steering wheel on the right side. This is not a really complex build and the fitting is as you can expect from Tamiya, some can even be put in place without glue, if you would like that.
Both of us are really happy with how the Supra turned out and had a lot of fun with this build, next time we will aim for a 1:1

Feedback for improvements are always welcome.
The car looks great, but building it together with your daughter must have been so much fun, John @johnb! I need to try this too with my wife
@fxrob, thank you, Felix. Building together was really great indeed. Never tried to ask my wife, but I'm pretty sure I know the answer already
Fantastic result, John! This is a beautiful Supra! Loved following your build thread as well!
@fiveten, thanks a lot, Spiros. It was a pleasure to have you following the progress.
@johnb - Smart daughter you have there John! Great build.
@brithebuilder, thank you, Brian. She absolutely is
Fantastic build with a tremendous finish.
@alistairfgauld, thanks a lot for your kind words, Alistair
Nice work and a great result, and yeah, building with your offspring is very much fun.
@tcinla, thank you very much, Tom. It definitely is and building something on four wheels without wings was also fun for a change. Still prefer something that flies though.
Great build, John. I'm liking the color a lot, even if it wouldn't be my first choice (though far from last) in 1:1.
Owning an older Supra myself, I intend to get around to building all but the first generation (no kit availablity) some day, and this build is a good bit of inspiration to make that a plan for 2025. Glad to hear that this goes together well, and clearly looks great built too.
@pb_legend, thanks a lot, Andrew. We did like the color too even though we have never seen it this colorful in real life. Not sure if my daughter would go for this if she had the chance for a 1:1 car. What's the color of your Supra.
Would love to see your Supra builds taking shape this year.
Perhaps they will make their way to the build section, even though 3/4 have already been started in years past.
Mine is a third generation, and it's red, but I also like black.
A great family affair John. I love modelling with my son and have quite a few joint ventures finished now. The Celica certainly looks the part. I
had a 1976 Celica 1600 GT when I was 19 in 1980. Lovely car in its day and only moved it on in a part exchange for a 1973 Datsun 240 Z which I still own. Oh nostalgia
@thom, thank you, Guy. Those Toyota sports cars at that time were great, nostalgia indeed. The Datsun 240Z is a wonderful car as well.
Superb model, I hope to get my kids into this hobby some day, they both like arts and crafts very much but at 5 an 10 of age it is still early for this hobby. All the best from down below the map!
@michel-verschuere, thanks a lot, Michel. Maybe still a bit too young, but they definitely have a great teacher around.
John @(johnb),
What sets this model from others is that it doesn't look like a model of a car. Or it's not toy like. The wheels and the paint job along with the lighting arrangement go along way in making your build look like a Supra. Congratulations to both you and your daughters skill set in making this jewel.
@stephen-w-towle, thank you very much for those compliments, Stephen. Really appreciated by my daughter as well.
MAN! That's a beauty, John. Well done!
@gwskat, thanks a lot, Gary
This looks great, John @johnb ! You are a master builder of automobiles as well as aircraft, a man of many talents.
@ssgt, thank you, Jay. The help of my daughter was definitely required to turn it into a nice model. Not sure ifm I could have managed it alone.
Great looking Supra, John!
What kind of paint did you use for the bodywork? A metallic automotive lacquer?
@alfred, thanks a lot, Alfred. It was a Tamiya rattle can paint, from the TS series.
Thx John.
Nice work, John. That’s a great little car. Excellent paintwork too.
@j-healy, thank you, John
Looks great, even though I'm not a big fan of the current Supra's styling (I much prefer that of the '87 Supra I owned back in the day).
@gwfabian, thank you, Greg. Those early Supras were beautiful cars as well.
That’s a nice looking BMW, oops, I mean Toyota, John, so glad you and your daughter enjoyed the build together. I wonder what she’s planning for your next birthday?
@chinesegeorge, thanks a lot, George. The engine for sure is a BMW, but Tamiya left it out of the kit. Now you start me thinking about what my next birthday present will be
@johnb if you soak that thing in spring water from Mt. Fuji, it might grow into a 1:1 version during the night. Great looking build. Thanks for sharing.
@coondog, thank you, Matt. We might give that a try. Let's book our next holiday to Japan.
What a beauty, John @johnb & daughter! Turned out geogeous.
@eb801, thanks a lot, Eric.
Excellent result @johnb. And what a nice cooperation it must have been. The 1:1 should be worth testing as well!
@hptiggelaar, thank you, Harm. It was really a lot of fun to build this together, I will check with her about a 1:1 project
Excellent model - living in Japan we see these every day but not often in that blue.
@christopher, thanks, Christopher. In the Netherlands they are quite rare, most of them are grey, the blue one I never saw in real life.
Nice work! Love the blue1
@guitarhack5, thanks a lot, Scott.
Looks real nice work,
@roofrat, thank you, Robert
This really came out nicely, John (@johnb). This may not be a really complex kit as far as assembling the parts goes, but the complexity goes way up to get a great finish like this. Now I have the itch to build the Tamiya 240Z Fairlady I have stashed away. Well done.
@gblair, thanks a lot, George. Would love to see you start building this Fairlady.
