Trumpeter, 1:32 scale, Curtiss P-40F-1-Cu, "Warhawk"

Always been a fan of the P-40, in all it's variations. I decided to build this kit because it's the only kit of the type out there. For any other marks, I would absolutely pick the Hasegawa kit every time. I was not a big fan of this trumpeter kit and I think it falls WAY short of the Hasegawa.

I wound up using True Details weighted tires, Tamiya custom mixed acrylics for the Desert Air Force Scheme of Middle Stone and Dark Earth over Azure Blue. Decals are from Kits World, Infini Scale Aero Rigging for the antenna, fine solder for the brake lines and a Quinta Studios 3D cockpit decals. I think these are great and really helped to dress up the 'Office'. I plan on using them on all my bigger scale builds in the future. Weathering was done using Flory Washes, thinned oils and pastel chalks.

All in all it was not a terrible model to build and I am happy with it, but on the same token, IF Hasegawa had made a kit of the same aircraft, I would have bought it instead.

  4. Nice work, Frederick. Merlin P-40s are always interesting.

  5. Super job Frederick!

  6. Nice work on my favorite P-40 variant as usual from you. As much as I love the P-40F/L I did not bother to pick up the Trumpeter kit since they did a poor job on it. Would love to see an accurate one in 1/32. Perhaps if the Eduard 1/32 P-51B sells well they may decide to release one.Too bad many years ago I messed up my Grey Matter/Hasegawa conversion and ended up tossing it.

    • Hey Kevin!
I don’t necessarily think it was a horrible kit, but it doesn’t quite hold up to the Hasegawa kit.

I thought about getting the Grey Matter Conversion, but I have also heard it can be a pain to use.

Are you headed to the NATS in Virginia?

      • HI Freddie,

Had a senior moment and forgot to reply. At this point, I doubt I will be attending the Nats. Really want to go since I have not been since 2008, but I hope that the situation will change and I can go.

As for the Trumpeter kit, my main beef is the accuracy and the nose just is inaccurate which turns me off. The Grey Matter conversion was very nice, but I ended up with the windscreen being too wide for the fuselage. I saw no way to fix it and just got fed up and tossed it. Still have the Zotz P-40F sheet that I hope to use some day when an accurate P-40F is marketed.+

  7. Nice stuff. Great photos.

  8. A lovely Warhawk. I'm a big fan of the iconic P-40 - got lots of them in the stash to put together!

  9. Despite the kit's shortcomings, you worked some magic and came up with a good result. I'm a big fan of the P40 in all its guises.

  10. Damn, this is superb. Bravo!

  11. Exemplary Fredrick. Really, really nice. Great paint application and weathering. After the Tomahawk, the Merlin P-40s have always appealed the most to me.

  12. She's a pretty one, Frederick @fjs3! I too have a P-40 waiting in the stash and you just got me motivated 🙂

  13. Nice job, Frederick

  14. That's a great P-40, Frederick! 👏 I love the "tail art", too! 🤩

  15. Beautiful job Sir!

  16. Great work on a challenging kit, Frederick. Nice restrained weathering. That Quinta 3d interior looks fantastic. Can't beat the realism when it comes to close-up photography.
