1/144 KC-135 refueling a B-2 Spirit Bomber
I uploaded a few WIP pics of this little diorama a few months ago and after languishing on the shelf for a few months, I decided to finish the build. I don't normally build anything smaller than 1/72, but these two at 1/144 were the perfect size as they are pretty large airplanes to begin with. The KC is molded by Hobbycraft and it fit together very nicely. The B-2 was a total surprise. It's a Revell snap-together kit and the fit was awesome. Revell also captured the shape and proportions very well, too. The only modifications I made to the models were the mounts and the refueling port on the B-2. I used a surgical K-wire to mount the B-2 to the ebonized solid walnut base. I used Mr Paint for both planes and finished off the B-2 with Mr Paint's Have Glass varnish. I also used after market decals on the KC.
I like that a lot, George...beautifully done display. Perhaps you could add another photo to give us some sort of perspective on the actual size?
Hey Craig- I added another shot for you.
A little larger than I'd imagined given the scale...and the detail/finish/weathering on the tanker is outstanding (again...given that scale). A very nice job indeed, sir. And thank you.
That is very cool! Nicely done!
Thanks for the kind words.
Hi George. Very nice work.
What is Mr. Paint Have Glass varnish?
Hi Johannes- It's a semi-clear, semi-matte paint that simulates the RADAR absorbing material present on the B-2, F-22, F-35 and now the F-16.
Hello George,
Museum piece. I am very impressed with the results on this scale.
Regards, Dirk / The Netherlands.
Thanks, Dirk. Glad you like it.
This is real nice!
Excellent diorama
Awesome! Both models look great, and the dio idea is excellent.
Fabulous!
Two great subjects brought together in one fantastic dio! What is not to like about that! Amazing skills once again mate. The finish on both planes is really impressive.
Thanks, gents.
Outstanding, George. It captures the 2 aircraft in a great setting!
Amazing réalisation, congratulations ?
Eric
George, well done, two wonderful looking models, and a nice display !
Very good, George. Great idea, nicely modelled.
Thanks, all. I had originally built this with an F-15E and had painted the KC a lighter gray, but in the end, I thought it looked a little weak so I took it all apart, stripped the paint off of the KC, built the B-2 and painted it, and repainted the KC.
I wondered what had happened to this project, now I know. Very good work, especially the finish on the B-2, and the way you've presented it.
Fabulous work George.
Lovely job on the paint. It really brings out the shape of each model and adds to the whole scene.
Thanks very much, Chris. I need to start building again. Haven't done any in a year.
very cool diorama.
George Well done! I was an Instructor Pilot on the KC-135 for 7 years and spent countless hours in it flying over Iraq and Afghanistan. I was also stationed in RAF Mildenhall and flew the Box D tail that you made a model of. I was wondering if by any chance you made these models on commission? feel free to email me at [email protected]
