Capt. Freddie Ohr's P-51D Mustang.
This one's been a long time coming. The AeroMaster decals must be 20 years old at least & they've been on my 'must do' list for as long. The kit is the Airfix 1/48th. first variant, which I have done once before & I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. There are several colour photos of this aircraft in various references & they all show a pretty clean 'plane; possibly because the pilot was C.O of the unit? With this build I tried to portray the wings in a puttied/lacquered finish, which turned out to be quite hard to do to my satisfaction. I used Vallejo & AK metallics with a touch of medium sea grey mixed in for the wing surfaces to represent the lacquered finish. The yellow is Model Master chrome yellow. The fuselage was finished with a coat of Future & the wings with my home brew eggshell clear. I have added hydraulic lines, but otherwise it is out of the box.
I love that colour scheme
Thanks George. Yellow is not the easiest colour to apply, but I think the result is worth the effort.
Nice one! Good to see some 15th AF stuff!
Have the same old Aeromaster sheet still lying around somewhere 😀
Thanks Reinhard. The decals worked like a charm. Even after all this time.
Very nice! Looks great.
Thanks Robert.
Nice one Tony. I've got 2 of the Airfix kits as well as the Eduard one in the stash. hoping to get to them this year.
Thanks Dale. Enjoy your Mustangs: the hardest part is deciding which colour schemes to do!
This is a nice looking Mustang Tony. I have several of these 1/48 Airfix and some of the older Tamiya kits in the stash. So far I don't have any of the new tool Eduard kits. From what I have read they are very nice too. Like Dale stated, I also have plans for some Mustang builds later this year.
I really like what you have done here. The yellow sets it apart from the others. Very nice !
Thanks Louis. I've just bought the Eduard early -D kit & it looks superb. That's not to take anything away from the Airfix kit though & I can see myself buying the Mk.IV release with the Aero products prop.
Tony, Really nice work. I have photos of this aircraft in a few of my reference books, and must say you've captured its look very well. Well done !
Thanks Terry. This scheme was love at first sight, but I was a bit slow to get started!
If it wasn't for the Eduard kit, the Airfix kit would be Best P-51D in 1/48 Scale. As it is, it's Best Affordable P-51D in 1/48 Scale, and as you have demonstrated, a real honey of a kit.
Beautiful work, great result.
Many thanks Tom.
Great build and great colour scheme.
Thanks Haslam.
Really nice, matey - did that same aircraft in 2018 from the Tamiya kit...

SWEET !
Thanks Louis; there's something about yellow tails that's hard to resist!
Your Mustang looks fantastic Tony!
The colour scheme is very attractive.
I recon the Airfix Mustang kit is great too.
Hi Michael! Thanks for the compliments. There's still a few more Mustangs left to do & I have a stack of decals as well.
Great looking Pony, and I'll pile-on saying I love the scheme! Well done.
Thanks Greg. Maybe I'll look out for a red tail next time or perhaps a yellow nose?
