Normandy ‘Piggy-back’ ride
This is the 1/48 Tamiya U.S. Army 2.5 ton 6x6 Cargo Truck, and the Mister Craft 1/48 Piper Cub.
The model deplicts the transportation of Piper Cubs in the days following the D-day landings as they were brought off the large landing ships.
The Tamiya 1/48 scale military vehicle kits are brilliant and I really enjoy them. The Mister Craft on the other hand was incredibly basic with an interior that isn't even worth mentioning. However as I was putting a tarpaulin over my cockpit area it didn't matter. I will say however that the fabric effect on the wings and body was surprisingly good.
Overall I'm happy with how this came out.
Very cool
Oh that looks great, and driving down a French road with hedgerows on each side would be a great display. Nice mix of my favorite subjects, 1/48 WWII vehicles and aircraft!
This is an amazing idea of a modeling project, Carl!
both models are made to excellency and the combination is stunning.
Love the weathering, too.
What materials did you use for the canvas cover and the ropes?
The ropes are just thick cotton. The canvas is actually the foil lining from a cigarette packet. A mate at work smokes and every so often ill grab his empty pack and carefully remove the lining. However tissue works well too. Just paint it into position with white glue/water mixture.
Thanks a lot!
Outstanding model and idea. Thumbs up!
Great combo - and a super reminder to get some 1/48 vehicles 😀
An excellent original idea brilliantly carried out. When I was into railway modelling we used masking tape to simulate canvas coverings. Definitely liked.
That is a cool setup. Love the paintwork.
Waiting for a proper English truck to throw a Gladiator on the back.
Well done Carl I really like the way you executed this idea. I was going to ask the same question about the canvas but you explained that above. Always amazes me how modelers come up with depictions of diorama details by just using some imagination and basic materials.
Very nice. Great topic. w.o. Ground support bird don’t fly !
I remember when I used to smoke that English sigarette packages had that fine woven fabric look on the back side of the foil.
Great idea!
You made best use of the Piper kit ;-D
Lovely work there!
Great project! So awkward to see an airplane "de-winged" to be transported via wheels - they so belong in the sky!
Wow, great display! Doesn’t take up too much room, either.
I love the story this tells, and really nice work too!
🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Nice work Carl, very nice weathering and details.
You've learned well from your Dad how to conserve shelf space haven't you.
Nice work on all of it and using the cigarette pack foil is pure genius.
I've used tissue/white glue but I'd never've thought of this.
Now I can't wait to try it myself, thank you Carl!
Hello Carl,
Wow. What an original subject. I enjoyed your pictures and the explanation.
Regards, Dirk.
Pretty good job Carl!
