Special Hobby 1/72 Harvard MkIIA

December 6, 2022 · in Aviation · · 24 · 0.8K

A reboxing of the plastic with some lovely resin bits and transparencies from and surgical instructions to covert the Texan to the Harvard.
No real issues with the fit, my only complaint would be that the masking set I got from Special Hobby had not been cut completely around and made it difficult to get them cleanly off the sheet.

Primed with Flat White,
Painted with Colourcoats Dark Green, Dark Earth, RAF/FAA Yellow, US Interior Green, Tamiya Nato Black, Rubber Black, Clear Red, Clear Blue, Clear Green, Clear Yellow and Flat Aluminium.
Weathered with Flory Dark Dirt, Windsor & Newton Oils, Citadel Agrax Earthshade, Nuln Oil and Seraphim Sepia.
Finished with Windsor & Newton Galeria Satin and Matt Varnishes.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers,
Alistair

  1. Thanks for building this, Alistair (@alistairfgauld). Having been an instructor pilot, I have a soft spot for trainers, especially the Texan/Harvard. I have two of these kits in the stash, but have always wondered how the conversion to a Harvard would work. Your plane looks terrific, especially the work you did to make the canopy look right. Too bad about the partially cut masks, since they are what really helps on a kit like this. Well done.

    • Thanks very much George.
Special Hobby supply separate canopy parts specifically for the Harvard in the kit.
There isn't much surgery to be done but the instructions do tell you to cut a little too far towards the tail.
No biggie, though, a shim and some filler solves that.
Apart from that depending on the version you do you might have to sand off the underside lights and a couple of panel lines need to be filled and one new one scribed.
It's a fairly easy conversion and a nice kit that fits well together.

      Cheers,
      Alistair
