Gato class Subs
This article is part of a series:
Hi All,
I am presenting two WW2 Gato class submarines. Additions for my ships I visit builds.
I have had the pleasure/honor of touring the USS Drum, in Mobile, Alabama and the USS Cod, in Cleveland, Ohio.
If you are ever in either area of the US stop in and take a tour of two "boats" that served during WW2.
Both kits were built out of the box with added photo etch railings and propellers. These tiny kits ended up a bit rough around the edges but they were fun to build.
Thanks for stopping by. As always...KEEP IT FUN!
Kits:
Hobby Boss, 1/700, USS Gato, 1941
Hobby Boss, 1/700, USS Gato, 1944
Tom's Modelworks, 1/700, US Gato Photo Etch Detail (enough parts for two kits)
Paint:
The 1941 version painted in an early war, MS 9 scheme.
Vallejo, Black Grey
Vallejo Hull Red
The 1944 version painted in a late war, MS 32/3SS-B scheme.
Vallejo, Black Grey
Vallejo, Medium Sea Grey
Tru Color, 5-H, Haze Gray
Both are excellent, Gary!
Thank you, Spiros.
Very nice Gary
Thanks, George
Two excellent subs, gary @gwskat
I will keep it in mind to take the tour when I'm able to get there.
Thank you, John
Great subs, Gary. I’m fortunate to live across the bay from the Drum and always enjoy visiting it and the Alabama.
Thanks, John. Would love to get back to the park.
Fantastic builds, Gary! Working the photoetch must have been a challenge, but well worth it! Definitely adds to the builds.
The reference materials you have shared are great, too. Especially the ‘virtual tour’ of USS Drum. It’s impressive what can be achieved these days!
Congratulations again - your ‘slightly rough’ is what most of us aspire to!
Thanks, Paul! Glad you enjoyed the links.
