Airfix Supermarine Walrus Mk.1 1/48

September 6, 2024 · in Aviation · · 14 · 215

I finally get around to show my latest build. It took me two months and it really pushed me to the limit, the rigging above all, that is.

The kit is perfect, amazing detail both on the inside and the outside. Everything except for maybe the open canopy fits. I did make a few mistakes around the lower wings which resulted in some gaps.

I used Ammo Mig and AK interactive acrylics, Ammo Mig panel line wash and some AK interactive pens for the weathering, mainly the for the faint traces of rust. At the end i added a light gray filter. Rigging was done by using AK interactive mega thin thread. Boy, did i learn a lot! It was the first time i did rigging and i sure made a lot of mistakes. Lord of rigging, forgive me: I did not do all the rigging, i just couldn't. It was too much, too time consuming and i am too clumsy. Please don't look too closely.

Initially i had the windows around the cockpit open, but my Montex Mask failed and i had to use the closed canopy with an Eduard mask. Very disappointing and i will surely avoid Montex in the future!

There were a few times were i was ready to toss it, but then Alistair @alistairfgauld posted his beautiful version a couple weeks ago and it gave me some extra mojo to cross the finish line at last.

It sure is an ugly bird but remarkable nonetheless! I might just do another version someday.

  1. Very sharp work Felix. Paint and weathering are outstanding.

  2. Glad you finished Felix. Best to not let these get the best of us and I am sure now, that despite the challenges, you are happy to have it in your collection. It looks great. The Walrus is one of those cool looking and iconic WWII aircraft.

  3. Excellent Walrus.

  4. You did an amazing job, Felix @fxrob
You are right about the Airfix kit, it is a wonderful kit, I built it myself but the outcome is far less than yours.
I really like how your painting and weathering turned out.

Your Walrus served as an inspiration, i kept coming back to yours as reference and motivation! Your build is very beautiful and there is nothing to compare, really. Thank you for your kind words!

  5. Glad you brought it across the finish line - it would have been a shame not to get a chance to see the final result! It looks great.

  6. Excellent job and really great result, Felix!
    Well done!

  7. Great build Felix. You took inspiration from another to get yours finished. The old Walrus not as streamlined as its stable mate but you have done it proud ๐Ÿ‘
