Richard Bong P 38

January 19, 2025 · in Aviation · 5 · 220

This is a famous plane and a well known model kit- Tamiya’s 1/48 late model P 38. I built this for a friend and mailed it to him yesterday. I hope I did it justice.

Kit goes together very well except for the fit of the three piece canopy which does not line up well. Canopy masks are perfect though.

Because I built it as a wheels up version, I completely avoided all of the many and seemingly complex wheel well pieces. Saved a lot of time. All paint was Vallejo Air. Finished with coats of Pledge polish.

  1. Very nice P-38, Mark!

  2. A wonderful result, Mark @markhedrick
You definitely did it justice and your friend will be very happy to receive it.

  3. Some strong work in the Natural Metal painting dept Mark (@ markhedrick). I heard on the radio that "Marge" has been recovered from the jungles of the Pacific. When Bong left for the state's the a/c was passed down to another pilot. The search crew was able to identify the wreckage by the red paint. Red being short supply and was applied in
small amounts to pilots like Bongs aircraft.

  4. Thanks for the comments. I saw online about the recovery of this plane wreckage including a picture of the serial number marking. Very little was left.
