F-4 C/D Phantom II (Rhino)
This article is part of a series:
While stationed at Bitburg, Germany with the 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, the unit transitioned from the F-105 to the F-4D. Dad was sent to Davis Monthan AFB, AZ to learn to fly the beast. He trained on the C-model from April to June, 1966, and then came back to fly the D at Bitburg until October 1966. During transit back to Bitburg he ferried a D across the pond - those may be the refueling shots. I'm not sure which of these shots were from DM or Bitburg (I think the palm trees give some of the locations away!).
We were due to remain in Germany for a 3-year tour, but dad volunteered to go to Vietnam, so our stay there was only 1 year. We went back to Kentucky to hang while dad went to Cam Ranh Bay, S. Vietnam with the 559th Tactical Fighter Squadron.
Marvellous! What a series Greg!
Look at all them stencils on a new plane...
Crazy isn't it? The combat aircraft at Cam Ranh look a bit different...
