1/48th JA-37 Viggen
This is my Tarangus, 1/48th Scale, JA-37 Viggen.
I bought this kit when it was first released, but it stayed in my stash for a long time, because, quite frankly, I wasn’t sure my skills were up to the task of recreating the iconic splinter camouflage. And frankly, there was no way I was going to build a Viggen and not do that camouflage scheme.
In my humble opinion this kit is simply spectacular. The fit was superb, and the molding sublime. The only upgrades I added was a resin ejection seat from Pavla, that was actually part of a cockpit set for the old ESCI kit. I didn’t think the resin pit was much of an improvement over the kit, so I only used the bang seat.
Even though I possessed a mask set from “Gator Masks” for the splinter camouflage, I was still apprehensive. Yet I threw caution to the wind and jumped in with both feet. In the end, I was really happy with the camo scheme, but even with the masks, doing it was nerve wracking and time consuming.

There’s no easy way to mask this, even with some commercial masks. You have much more patience than I do.

Painting a camo like that would scare me also. The finish is spectacular, I like it a lot

Hello Scott,
Since seeing this aircraft during the recent airshow at Volkel Airbase, I had never seen the AC.
It has made a great impression, and so does your model. It looks fantastic.
Regards, Dirk

Great job on that paintwork. I like the Viggen but have avoided modeling one because I’m afraid of that camo too!

A real beauty! I agree, if you’re gonna build a Viggen, it’s gotta be in splinter scheme! I’ve got 2 in the stash (1/72) and finally found a mask set for the splinter scheme. Bought paint, and am all ready to give it a go, as soon as I get a few other items off my build list! Hope it looks something like yours!

Very nice finish. Congrats…
Viggen is one of my favorites and I have Stör-Viggen version in Special Hobby box. I heard about the kit has some issues. And because of this I was not sure about starting it. However your work made me think again…

I love your Viggen! I’ve had a real liking for the Vig since I first got a model of one back in the mid to late 70s.
GREAT job on the camo. Also, I see great improvement in the number of photos you posted: 50% more than your first post … the great Shawnee! LoL!

I’m partial to splinter camouflage on aircraft as it brings out the color and take out the boredom of looking at monotone jets. Yours looks awesome and I applaud you for a job well done.
