Hawk Bf-109 Repop

September 26, 2022 · in Aviation · · 13 · 0.9K

Those of you of a certain age (like me) no doubt made several of these old Models Bf-109s. I could always talk Mom into buying a few of the old kits on a trip to Gemco for a few cents.

This nostalgia build (again?!) is a repop of the Hawk kit. The kit is still festooned with rivets and no cockpit, which is fine because the canopy is molded in Beverly dark clear plastic so there's no way to see inside, and a total of 11 parts including the stand. Not a complex build. The Cartograph decals were a nice touch.

The Spitfire Mk. 22 is next.

  1. Happy memories for you, Scott, I don’t recall these ever being available in the UK.

  2. Great memories in both of those kits, Scott. Nicely done, and thanks for the imaginary time travel you provided. This is what modeling is about.

  3. Built and blew up quite a few FROG kits including this one!

  4. Nice work on a classic kit. Brings back memories of all the 1/72 kits I used to build and hang from my bedroom ceiling. Love the big red nose on this version.

  5. Excellent result out of a classic kit, Scott! Keep them coming!

  6. Great outcome of this oldie, Scott @guitarhack5. Always nice to get those memories back.

  7. Also a nice reminder of the state of "histericull reeseerch" back in the day, when the i****s forgot to take orthochromatic B&W film into consideration. "It's dark, it must be red!"

  8. Yes! the 109 the Spitfire, the Wildcat and the Zero, had about the same parts count, no landing gear and the same stand. Nicely done. @guitarhack5

  9. Nice work, Scott! I must’ve built 2-3 each of the Hawk 109, Spitfire and Wildcat. I grew up about 6 blocks from the Hawk factory in Harwood Heights, Illinois and every drug store and dime store in the area stocked them. I never did get the Zero.

  10. Building out these old kits is fun - reliving the past! Nicely done.

  11. I don’t remember seeing the Wildcat or Zero. I do remember making several of the Swifts, though. That, the Dauntless and Corsair. But those three had landing struts. No wheel wells, just a hole for the strut.

  12. Nice job, painting the model to represent the box art looks great! I build all 4 kits back in the early 70’s. I think all 4 were built in the same evening. About 2 years ago I built the Spitfire again but converted it into a Mk.XIV. I sanded down the rivets. Sometime in the future I plan on building the 109 again.
