Airfix 1/48 Hawker Sea Fury FB.11
Happy New Year everyone. This model was built for the Hawker 100th group. It was built using the 1/48 Airfix Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 kit that was released in 2018. It depicts an Australian Sea Fury FB.11 from 724 Squadron of the Royal Australian Navy based at HMAS Albatross in New South Wales in 1953. This kit has been reviewed several times on iModeler and other hobby websites, so I won't go into a lot of detail about the build other than to say it went together very well. The model required almost no filler at all and all of the parts went together without problems. I added an Eduard PE set in the cockpit, mainly for the instrument panel, the seat belts, and to provide the gunsight which is missing from the kit. This plane was apparently an airshow aircraft which was kept in very clean condition, so I didn't add any of my usual weathering and stains. I just noticed I forgot to add a small antenna on top of the vertical stabilizer, which I will add later today. If you want more info about the build, please visit the build log in the Hawker 100th group. Cheers.
Very cool other George. A nice change from the standard camo
Thanks, George (@blackadder57). I don't do too many shiny things. They make me uncomfortable. Give me camo! Happy New Year.
Great job, George on a nice kit. Agree with George H with his comment on the scheme...nice choice!
Thanks, gary (@gwskat). This is one of the nicest Airfix kits I have built. I have several other of the "new" Airfix kits that are really calling me now.
An amazing start of 2023, George @gblair
This Fury looks great, if you didn't tell about the antenna, I would not have noticed it.
It was a pleasure to follow your thread.
Happy New Year to you as well.
Thanks, John (@johnb). I probably need to start using sticky-notes to remind me to add last minute things. It is just a small whip antenna, but it will bother me if I don't go back and add it.
George,
I enjoyed following the blog and seeing the cockpit detail. The paint job looks great and the spinner has a little depth and really helps make this kit stand out.
I live down the road from an airport that hangers a Sea Fury. Every spring they have Airport Days and they push out Saw Bones for public display. The aircraft is not small about the size of a P-47. It gets raced at Reno, a lot of operators replace the motor for a 2800 or a 3350 and match it with a prop taken from a Sky Raider. Still a impressive aircraft. Who wouldn't want to model this beast?
Two thumbs up .
Thanks, Stephen (@stephen-w-towle). The Sea Fury is probably a direct descendant of the Typhoon and the Tempest, so you figure it would be a beast. I don't usually build more than one of a specific kit, but I may need to build another one of these. Thanks for following along on the build. Cheers.
Very colourful Fury George @gblair
Turned out splendid
Thanks, Pedro (@holzhamer). This was a really nice kit and was perfect for a shiny paint scheme. Cheers.
Gorgeous build George, you picked a great looking scheme.
Thanks, Bob (@v1pro). I really like all-blue paint schemes. It seems formal, almost like wearing a tuxedo.
Nicely done George, can't ever remember seeing one of these without camo. Looks nice in blue.
Thanks, Tom (@tom-bebout). I was looking for something a little different, and this filled the bill.
What a way to start '23 with your completed Sea Fury, George @gblair. Turned out great! Really does look sharp in blue with the white canopy trim. A really beauty. I got mine delivered on New Year's Eve. Can't wait to dive in.
Thanks, Eric (@eb801). You will really like the kit. Well engineered, lots of options. It is missing the gunsight, so you will need to add that. The Eduard cockpit set has one. The only problem area was the underwing rockets. They are attached to the rails already and they are split vertically. Removing the seams would have been tough, but I didn't use them for this model. If I was going to use them, I think I would cut the rockets off the rails, assemble and clean up the rails, then source some new rockets.
Great looking bird. I never realized how much the cowl/nose look like an FW 190. Liked!
Thanks, Matt (@coondog). It was developed to be a high performance replacement for the Tempest. I think it is the cowling and the front of the cowling that look like the 190. Cheers.
Love the color scheme you chose- excellent build!
Thanks, David (@dbutlr). I am always looking for something a little different, and this fit the bill. Have a great New Year.
I really enjoyed following the "in progress" George. You got a great result.
Thanks for following along on the build, Tom (@tcinla). This was a really nice kit to build.
Great job, George! I love a clean plane!
Thanks, John (@j-healy). I don't do many clean planes, but this one was fun.
A wonderful Sea Fury, George! The kit might be good, but it takes your skills to come up with such an excellent result! Loved following your build thread, research, techniques and everything.
Congratulations!
Thanks for keeping me company on the WIP, Spiros (@fiveten). Now, on to the P-51B. :o)
Airfix started a lot of us off in this great hobby so it’s always pleasing to see a well built kit from their range. The naval colour scheme really suits it, a great start to 2023, George.
Thanks, George (@chinesegeorge), for dropping in. I know you don't do many military models, so I appreciate your comments.
So nice George. One of the most gorgeous of all Aircraft .not being camouflages makes it a particular challenge to get good results like this.
Thanks, Bernard (@bernardbedeur). I really like the all-blue paint schemes on planes, so I can't bring myself to weather them.
Looks great - a Sea Fury wearing kangaroos! Well done.
Thanks, Greg (@gkittinger). The roundels were two parts each, with the kangaroo being separate. I really had to pay attention to get the kangaroo facing the right direction in each case. On the wings they always face forward, and their feet always point toward the fuselage.
A real beauty, George! I might have to do one in 1/72.
Thanks, Robert (@roofrat). I really liked this Airfix kit. It is one of their newer kits and was really well engineered. I don't think Airfix has a 1/72 version, but Trumpeter makes one. I will be watching for your build. Cheers.
