More oldies

April 9, 2023 · in Aviation · · 19 · 588

Inspired by the recent posts of kits, I thought I'd add a few . Almost everything in my model collection can be considered “Vintage” , “Classic “, “old”.

The unbuilt kits are ones I've acquired over the years and just used as “ decor“ on shelves . I may one day build them or possibly save them for the Styrene Hall of Fame to put on display.

The ship models are Nichimo 1/200 scale kits. Submarine I-19 and the destroyer is Akizuki.

The built kits are :
Revell 1/32 Stuka , Hasegawa 1/32 Spitfire,
Fujimi 1/48 Bf-110, 1/48 Revell P-40Es & AMT P-40F, Monogram 1/48 SBD Dauntless, AMT 1/48 Beech Staggerwing & Lockheed Vega.
These are all models originally released in the 1950s, 60s, or 70s ( I think ).

And yes! There is magic in old kits!

  6. A very nice set of oldies, Jay @ssgt
Boxarts are indeed great, especially the setting of the 109 where the pilot is bailing out after being shot is exceptional.

  7. Really nice collection Jay , I would love to see that old Saab built up.

  8. Boxed or Built, great collection. All very nice, Jay!

  9. That's some classics you've got there, and some interesting reading material.

  10. Nice collection of oldies. I remember shoveling snow for the neighbors for a few hours to get that Stromberg kit!

  11. Thank you , Chas @chasbunch !
That DC-6 wooden kit is pretty nice. I wish they were still produced... it would be a nice change of pace.

  12. Certainly some memories there, Jay... I always thought the Ar 234 box art from FROG (meaning 'Flies Right Off the Ground', in reference to their original 2D card models with very suspect undercarriage - a piece of wire and plastic wheels!) was one of the best in its day. The Airfix Maurauder was a fine kit to build, too. And of course, the Christmas present I wasn't supposed to see before the big day... Revell's Ju87 with the snake on the fuselage sides. As inquisitive youngsters do, I was wandering around my dad's study one day and noticed that kit tucked away in a corner; whenever my folks were out, I'd tiptoe into the study, open the box and marvel at the kit. I always hoped it was for me, as I knew my dad's modelling interests rarely extended past the end of the Great War, although some interwar US biplanes also caught his attention. Eventually, Christmas day arrived, as did 6./StG2's Stuka... nicely built up by my dad... fun memories ;-).

    • Thank you for the comment Paul @paulh !

I always wondered about the name Frog... thanks for that interesting bit of trivia.

The Revell 1/32 Stuka is one of my favorite all time models. I remember building it back in the 1970s as a kid. I was happy this one’s decals were problem free.

      • Every day's a school day, Jay... I found out about what 'FROG' stood for while watching a TV show on antiques! It always included a reference to old toys and collectibles, and someone had an original 2D card model aircraft kit, and the presenter was able to tell them what 'FROG' meant.

Much later in life, I managed to hand-paint the snake emblem onto a 1/72 scale '87'... definitely a steady hand requried for that... :-).

  13. That Stuka was the only 1/32 kit I built back in grade school, and I still have fond memories of that hanging from my ceiling. Those old builds look good!

  14. Thank you, Greg @gkittinger , for the compliment.

I really love the old Revell 1/32 Stuka. It’s a classic.
