1/48 Eduard P-51D-5

June 11, 2023 · in Aviation · · 16 · 0.7K

My first attempt at building one of 's new offers. Finished several weeks ago but just now posting. Having build several Accurate Miniatures, Tamiya, Revell and a Airfix P-51 I decided to tackle the Eduard addition, this one is an Overtrees kit. Nice kit, really nice detail, but man there's quite a few really small parts to this kit. I believe in modeler lingo, it's fiddly. After some time on the bench, and having trouble seeing some of those little parts, I felt what the hey who needs them. Get her done became my battle cry.

So here she is, Devastating Dottie/Lady Janie VIII of the 317th FS, 325th FG from the Checkertail Clan. Additions were some 3D Decals from Eduard, Eagle Strike decal sheet 48092, plus an Ultracast seat. Overall paint was Tamiya Gloss Aluminum, yellow is Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow, and red is Model Master Insignia Red. The black checks are decals from the Eagle Strike sheet, and they are really nice Exhaust stain is pastel chalk, panel lines were done with a PittPen, and the top coat is Alclad Semi-Matt lacquer. Nice kit but not one for a novice.

  1. Very nice job. I really like the subtle weathering and your leaving the model clear of "underwing things" to show off those timeless Mustang lines. It is a pleasure to look at it.

  2. Nice, Tom. Have yet to try an Eduard P-51 myself.

  3. @tom-bebout - Fantastic build! Really looks great Tom.

  4. Great finished P-51. I agree that the Eduard kits are a bit overkill on the fiddly detail parts, but a nice kit. Thanks for sharing. Great NMF.

  5. Nice work on this kit Tom (@tom-bebout). I have this overtrees kit as well because I had bought the later version with the fairing on the vertical stabilizer, but I've always like the cleaner lines of this version. I'm not sure how or even when I will work on this since I am doing a B version at the moment.

I also agree that the weathering is nicely subtle. And I hear you on the small parts. It's a struggle every time I have to do the small stuff.

  6. Excellent result, Tom!

  7. Really nice result on this Mustang, Tom @tom-bebout
    Nice scheme and great execution.

  8. It looks great, Tom, maybe try a MENG version next?

  9. Nice work, Tom. I’ve been thinking of using those decals on the Airfix kit.

  10. Beautiful Mustang - that checker tail scheme was always one of my favorites!

  11. Good looking Mustang, I can't remember the last P-51 kit I have completed but like the looks of that Eduard kit. Nice work on getting the decals so nice, especially on the tail.

This doesn't look like a P-40 to me ! What gives ! Just kidding with you. Man you nailed it, and boy it looks great !

I have one of these Overtrees kits in the stash, but I have yet to build it. I'm way past due to build a 1/48 Mustang (or a P-40) I'll get cracking on the P-40 you sent me soon. Hopefully it will meet your expectations. I'm wrapping up the Corsairs now, so I'll let you know how the Fundekals work out.

  13. The 15th AF had very colorful aircraft. Many were better than the 8th. Oh, oh this statement will start a war!

  14. Beautiful, Tom. Those are great kits despite all that fiddly-ness.

  15. Super looking Mustang, and on one of your nice bases.
